Philips XC8349/01 vs Dyson V15: Differences

After weighing the differences between these two machines, I concluded that Dyson V15 won 3:0 and tied 1 against Philips XC8349/01 as a vacuum cleaner. For those who intend to choose a machine that can both vacuum and mop simultaneously, the winner is definitely Philips XC8349/01.

Vacuuming performance

The winner: Dyson V15

Performance on hard floors

In the cleaning tests on hard floors, both of these vacuum cleaners do an excellent job. They can pick up a variety of debris of different sizes, such as baking soda, sugar, chili flakes, breakfast cereals, and more.

The Dyson V15 features two cleaning heads, one is the Digital Motorbar, and the other is the Laser Slim Fluffy. These two nozzles not only work well with fine and small debris, but they also pick up larger debris like full-size Froot Loops without struggling.

The Laser Slim Fluffy cleaning head is specially designed to remove fine dust and debris from hard floors. It features a soft roller brush that is gentle on hard floors, preventing scratches and other damage. This one also includes an LED light ring that illuminates dirt and debris, making it easier to see and clean.

The Digital Motorbar is designed to pick up dust and debris from all floors. It is powered by a powerful motor that spins the brush bar at high speeds, creating strong suction to vacuum dirt and debris in. You can use this one for both carpets and floors without using the other cleaning head.

The XC8349/01 also offers users two main nozzles, including a standard suction nozzle and a 360° suction nozzle. The 360° suction nozzle is used to vacuum both floors and carpets. This is a unique feature that allows the vacuum cleaner to capture dust, dirt, and debris from all angles, including hard-to-reach areas and tight spaces.

In fact, the cleaning ability of the Phillips on hardwood floors is not inferior to Dyson V15. However, my tests show that the V15 picks up large debris more easily. In addition, this Dyson model also better vacuums dust in floor crevices.

Performance on carpets

On carpets, the Dyson V15 is somewhat better. Its Digital Motorhead is made to deep clean carpets and remove ground-in dirt and pet hair. The brush bar is equipped with stiff nylon bristles that agitate the carpet fibers, helping to dislodge dirt and hair for more effective cleaning.

Additionally, this cleaning head has some gates at the front, which allows the vacuum cleaner to adjust the suction power based on the type of surface being cleaned. The gates can be opened or closed to allow more or less air to flow through the head, which affects the suction power of the vacuum. When the gates are open, the suction power is reduced, which makes it easier to roll the unit on high-pile carpets.

Meanwhile, when you vacuum on pile carpets with the Philips XC8349/01, the machine tends to push the large debris forward. You need to lift up the machine and keep pushing it back and forth a few more times to suck up all the dirt. However, the machine still picks up small debris very well.

Pet hair performance

Both the Dyson V15 and Philips XC8349/01 are capable of effectively cleaning pet hair. However, some differences in their design and features may impact their performance.

The Dyson V15’s digital motorized cleaning head does not have a specific anti-tangle feature for hair. However, the cleaning head has a design that helps prevent tangling, and the brush bar is optimized to minimize hair wrap. It has a series of vanes that act as a comb to clean hair from the brush bar automatically. Additionally, the V15’s mini motorized tool is specifically designed to tackle pet hair and other debris from upholstery, stairs, and other hard-to-reach areas.

Meanwhile, the Philips XC8349/01 does not have specialized bristles or a self-cleaning feature to prevent hair or other debris from getting tangled. However, the brush roll can be easily removed for cleaning, which helps to prevent clogs and keep the vacuum functioning properly.

Suction power

The Dyson V15 has stronger suction power compared to the Philips XC8349/01. Unfortunately, I can’t measure the exact suction power of each machine. According to the manufacturer, the Dyson V15 has a maximum suction power of 230 Air Watts, while the Philips 8000 Series Aqua Plus XC8349/01 has a maximum suction power of 180 Air Watts.

Both the Dyson V15 and Philips 8000 Series Aqua Plus XC8349/01 come with adjustable suction power settings that allow you to control the amount of suction power the vacuum is using. This can be useful for different cleaning tasks, such as cleaning delicate surfaces or picking up stubborn dirt and debris. The Dyson V15 has three modes that you can select from depending on the cleaning task: Auto mode, Eco mode, and Boost mode. The Philips 8000 Series Aqua Plus XC8349/01 also has three suction power settings that can be adjusted according to the cleaning needs: “Turbo,” “Normal,” and “Eco.”.

Dirt bin and filtration

The winner: Dyson V15

Dirt bin

Both Dyson V15 and Philips XC8349/01 are bagless vacuum cleaners. They all store their picked-up dirt in a container. However, each machine has a different dirt container design.

The Dyson V15 has a large 0.76-liter dirt compartment, which is one of the largest on the market for cordless stick vacuums. This means you can clean more without needing to empty the dirt compartment as frequently. The dirt compartment of the Dyson V15 is also easy to empty with just the push of a button, and the dirt is released in a hygienic way without the need to touch it.

The dirt compartment of the Dyson V15
The dirt compartment of the Dyson V15

On the other hand, the Philips XC8349/01 also has a decently sized dirt compartment of 0.6 liters. Although it’s slightly smaller than the Dyson V15’s dirt compartment, it’s still relatively large for a cordless stick vacuum. This dirt container is also easy to remove and empty, making the cleaning process hassle-free. However, it doesn’t have the one-touch release feature like the Dyson V15. With the dust container of the XC8349/01, you need to manually open the lid of the dirt container and remove all the dirt.

Filtration

The Dyson V15 features a whole-machine filtration system that uses a combination of two filters to capture 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including dust, pollen, and pet dander. The first filter is a pre-motor filter that captures larger particles, while the second filter is a post-motor filter that captures smaller particles.

As for the Philips XC8349/01, the filtration performance is questionable. According to the manufacturer, this vacuum features a triple filtration system that captures dust, allergens, and other small particles. However, they don’t mention whether the system is HEPA-standard or something like that. Therefore, if you have allergies, this is not my first choice for you.

The filters of these two machines are washable and reusable, which helps to prolong their lifespan and reduce waste.

Design and convenience

Tie

Maneuverability

The first advantage of these cordless stick vacuums is that they don’t have a power cord, so you won’t be limited in terms of cleaning reach. Secondly, they are all quite lightweight. The Dyson V15 weighs 6.8 pounds, while the Philips XC8349/01 weighs 6.6 pounds. Thus, carrying and transforming the machine from one place to another is quite easy. You just need to fully charge the battery and take the device with you to clean it anywhere.

From the comparison chart above, you can see that both machines are designed to be relatively compact. Their cleaning heads are all low profile, while the machine can lie very flat, which allows users to access further under furniture.

Besides, both machines let users convert their stick vacuum into a handheld vacuum, which is much more convenient for cleaning stairs, ceilings, windows, etc.

Storage

Each device comes with a wall-mounted charging dock, which allows users to store and charge the device at the same time. The wall-mounted dock can be installed using screws or a mounting bracket, and the vacuum can be easily docked and charged when not in use.

However, the difference is that the Dyson V15’s docking station has more room for users to store some attachments, while the XC8349/01’s docking station is only used for hanging the machine.

Noise level

In this aspect, the Dyson V15 is less noisy than the Philips XC8349/01. The noise level of the V15 is around 70.5 dB, and that of the XC8349/01 is around 76 dB. Compared to other stick vacuums on the market, their noise level is acceptable.

70.5 decibels is a moderate noise level, only slightly above the sound of normal speech. So you can talk on the phone while vacuuming the room without raising your voice.

76 decibels isn’t really loud, either. It is similar to the sound when you are standing next to a piano while someone is playing or walking on a busy street with traffic.

Battery and charging

The Dyson V15 comes with a replaceable lithium-ion battery that provides up to 60 minutes of run time. Meanwhile, the Philips XC8349/01 uses a built-in lithium-ion battery that provides up to 80 minutes of run time. Both batteries are rechargeable and can be charged using their respective charging docks or cords. The battery of the V15 takes about 4.5 hours to charge fully, while the battery of the XC8349/01 actually takes about 5 to 6 hours. The battery of the Dyson V5 is removable and replaceable, so you can buy an extra battery for extended cleaning time if needed.

The Dyson V15 features a removable battery
The Dyson V15 features a removable battery.

According to my experience, the battery of the Dyson v15 supplies more than 70 minutes of runtime if you use it in its “Eco” mode with no attachments. In “Auto” mode, the machine will automatically adjust the suction depending on the surface you are vacuuming. Therefore, battery life also depends on the surfaces and the attachments being used. In “Boost” mode, this machine only runs for under 10 minutes if you run it continuously with the cleaning head. Therefore, in the highest power setting, you need to work quickly when dealing with stubborn messes.

With the Phillips XC8349/01, its battery life is quite long. In “Eco” mode, its battery can run for up to 80 minutes if you vacuum with the Aqua Nozzle. In “Normal” mode, with the same cleaning head, the machine can run for about 35 minutes. In the most powerful mode, the machine can still run for about 28 minutes, which is what impressed me the most.

Utilities

The Dyson V15

Mopping

The Philips XC8349/01 has a wet and dry cleaning mode that allows it to vacuum and mop at the same time. This is a feature that the Dyson V15 does not have. The XC8349/01 features an AquaPlus pedal, which you can press to release more water and cleaning solution onto the floor, providing deeper cleaning on tough spots or stains. It also comes with a detachable water tank that you can easily fill and empty as needed.

In the box, the manufacturer provides users with four microfiber mop pads to use with the mop head. The Aqua nozzle allows the user to vacuum and mop at once on floors. You can also detach the water tank when you want to switch from mopping hard floors to vacuuming carpets.

LED lights

Both machines feature headlights on their cleaning heads to help users reveal dust in poorly lit areas while cleaning.

The Philips XC8349/01 features LED lights on the 360° suction nozzle, which can illuminate the floor in front of you as you vacuum and highlight hard-to-detect or previously hidden dirt. This makes dust easier to spot, even under furniture or anywhere you need extra light. The headlights are located on the front of the cleaning head and can be turned on and off as needed.

The Dyson V15 comes with a laser on the slim fluffy cleaning head. I rate the illumination of this one more than that of the XC8349/01. It uses a laser to detect fine dust that you can’t normally see. This is a precise angled laser that makes invisible particles visible on hard floors. Therefore, you will not miss a single speck of dust.

LCD display

Compared to its opponent, the Dyson V15 is equipped with an LCD display, which provides real-time information on the machine’s performance, including current battery life, selected power mode, filter maintenance alerts, and blockage notifications.

The LCD screen on the Dyson V15
The LCD screen on the Dyson V15

The display is located on the back of the vacuum cleaner’s handle and is easy to read. It also features icons that indicate the current power mode and battery life, as well as alerts that indicate when the filter needs to be cleaned, or the vacuum cleaner is blocked. In addition, this screen also displays specifications related to the amount and size of particles picked up in your home. I quite enjoy this feature since it allows users to monitor the operation of the vacuum cleaner more effectively.

Piezo sensor

In addition to the utilities mentioned above, the Dyson V15 also employs a piezo sensor, which is located in the brush bar of the vacuum cleaner. This sensor detects the number of microscopic dust particles in the airflow, using vibrations to create a voltage that is proportional to the amount of dust passing through it. The sensor then sends this information to the V15’s microprocessor, which adjusts the suction power to maintain optimal cleaning performance.

This feature allows the V15 to intelligently adapt its suction power to the type of surface being cleaned and to adjust for changes in the amount of dust and debris being picked up, delivering powerful and efficient cleaning performance. Thus, it not only helps the device optimize performance but also helps increase the battery life.
