Shark Vertex Pro Vs Dyson V15: Which Is The Better Workhorse?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

The Shark Vertex Pro vs Dyson V15 hail from two of the vacuum cleaner market’s leading brands. Dyson is renowned for delivering top-tier, high-tech, albeit pricey models, while Shark has carved a niche for itself as the go-to brand for budget-conscious consumers.

As of now, the Dyson V15 holds the crown as Dyson’s most sophisticated stick vacuum, so it’s hardly a shocker that it consistently comes out on top in every face-off, this one included. What makes it stand out? Well, there are many: Detect Laser tech, piezo sensor, patented anti-tangle tech, and more.

The Shark Vertex IZ662H Pro, on the other hand, is a contender that deserves a second look, especially for those with pets. I really like its DuoClean floorhead, which works well on all surfaces, and PowerFins self-cleaning roller, which helps to reduce hair wrap issues.

Shark Vertex Pro Vs Dyson V15: Differences

The Dyson V15 wins 3-1 and ties once against the Shark Vertex. I’ll break down the strengths and weaknesses of each in the ensuing detailed comparison. So, let’s dive in!

Cleaning Performance

Winner: Dyson V15

Suction Power & Floorhead

The Dyson V15 tops out at a robust 230 AW, outshining its predecessors in the Dyson cordless vacuum lineup and making it the most potent model. On the other hand, the Shark Vertex’s suction power isn’t explicitly stated, but it also appears to pack a considerable punch.

The Dyson V15 comes with two floorheads, the Laser Slim Fluffy and Digital Motorbar cleaner heads, which have several improvements over their predecessors. The Laser Slim Fluffy is equipped with a small green laser light, which is called “Laser Detect” technology, while the Digital Motorbar has two adjustable gates and anti-tangle technology.

The Shark Vertex, on the other hand, sports a DuoClean brush roll system, including a soft roller on the front and a rubberized spiral roller in the middle. Both of these rollers spin opposite from each other, which is different from the Samsung Bespoke Jet‘s duo floorhead, where the soft roller doesn’t spin actively.

Hard Floor

Both the Shark Vertex Pro vs Dyson V15 performed great on my hard floor. After the initial sweep, the former merely left a couple of bits of large debris (about 1%) and a pinch of smaller ones (about 2%). These are excellent scores for a stick vacuum.

The Dyson V15, on the other hand, was a bit better since it easily removed all the debris without a second pass – a feat typically only achieved by top-tier upright vacuums.

Carpet

The Dyson V15 also presented itself as a real beast on my carpets. It effortlessly gathered all large debris across different carpet types, leaving only a trace of small debris—2% on the low-pile carpet and 4% on the high-pile variant.

The Shark IZ662H was also a bomb here. It picked up 100% of the larger debris on the first sweep, but I had to do an extra pass to pick up all the smaller debris left over (9% on the low-pile carpet and 7% on the high-pile one).

Hair Tests

These devices had no trouble scooping up all the hair and fur scattered on my carpets. And better yet, most vacuumed hair made its way into their dustbins, thanks to their anti-tangle technology.

If you look closely at the Shark Vertex’s middle brush roller, you’ll see some silicone blades and bristles alternate with each other there, which are designed to resist hair tangles. As for the Dyson V15’s Digital Motorbar, there is a comb behind the roller, which is also engineered for the same purpose.

My experiments revealed that, while these technologies aren’t flawless, they really worked. They really reduced the maintenance burden, and I could effortlessly hand-pull a few lingering long hair strands from their rollers at the end of the day.

One of the hallmark features of the Shark IZ662H is its flexible wand, dubbed Multi-Flex technology. This feature allows the wand to fold in half, thereby halving the vacuum’s vertical footprint for compact storage. My sole gripe is the lack of onboard storage for the included accessories and attachments, necessitating their storage in a close-by cupboard.

The Dyson V15 comes with a docking station that, when wall-mounted, offers a secure and handy spot for charging and storing the vacuum. It also features storage slots for two attachments, and a wand clip allows for two more to be affixed directly onto the vacuum’s body.

But if the thought of drilling into your beloved wall makes you flinch, there’s an alternate method for charging the Dyson V15 – Plug the charger straight into its battery and stash the vacuum and its attachments in a secure spot, such as a cupboard. And if budget isn’t a constraint, don’t hesitate to invest in a self-standing charging station for Dyson stick vacuums, which keeps your vacuum and all its attachments secured in one spot.

Weight & Maneuverability

Coming in at a mere 6.7 pounds, the Dyson V15 is considered lightweight, while the Shark IZ662H, weighing in at 8.95 pounds, leans towards the slightly heavier side.

Surprisingly, I found maneuvering both models on the floor equally effortless, despite the fact that the second one was considerably heavier. It’s possible that the IZ662H’s heavy and bulky DuoClean floorhead cleverly distributed the vacuum’s weight, minimizing the burden on my hands. But carrying it up and down the stairs when fully assembled can be quite a physical challenge for certain individuals, particularly the elderly.

In the handheld configuration, they become notably more lightweight and compact, yet I still struggled to utilize them to clean high areas for prolonged periods. And  I had to switch hands to minimize fatigue and strain on my hands and wrists every 15 minutes.

Regarding cleaning under the interior, the Multi-Flex technology of the Shark Vertex is a game changer. This design allows cleaning those hard-to-reach areas without requiring any bending or crouching, allowing it to score some brownie points with old people.

Battery Life

Both the Shark Vertex Pro and Dyson V15 are touted as offering up to 60 minutes of battery life. But my tests revealed that these machines, with the main nozzle attached,  deplete their battery life considerably quicker than advertised:

Shark Vertex IZ662HDyson V15
Maximum Battery Life≈ 39 mins≈ 41 mins
Minimum Battery Life≈ 12 mins≈ 12 mins
Charging Time≈ 3.5 hours≈ 4 hours

Why does this discrepancy exist? Could it simply be a sales gimmick? The answer is no! However, the battery life touted by the manufacturers can only be reached when the vacuum is consistently operated on the lowest power setting and paired with suction-only tools throughout its usage.

When deployed with the floorhead attachment, these vacuums drain their batteries more rapidly. The good news is that they are all powered by removable batteries. So if you frequently operate them on the highest power mode, having a spare battery in your arsenal would be prudent. Their batteries can all be charged independently by plugging the charger directly into them.

Dustbin & Filtration System

Winner: Dyson V15

The Dyson V15 features a  0.77-liter dustbin, which is a remarkable size for a stick vacuum. Emptying it is also very easy, thanks to the “point and shoot” emptying mechanism: simply push a lever downward, and all the contents are swiftly ejected. It’s advertised as “no-touch,” but I found myself having to remove dusty clumps of hair with my hands several times.

With a 0.32-liter dustbin, the Shark IZ662H holds less dust and dirt than most other stick vacuums. This one is not the tiniest, but it is smaller than the majority of cordless vacuums. All I had to do to empty its dustbin was push a lever down to open a hatch. There were a few long hair strands that wrapped around the middle component, and I also had to remove them manually.

The Dyson V15 features a sealed system (I put it through a fog test, and it didn’t show any signs of leaks) along with a filter that has the capability to capture particles as tiny as 0.1 microns with an impressive efficiency of up to 99.97%. For individuals with severe allergies, this system is truly a blessing. Its filter is washable, and you should run it under the tap whenever the LCD screen alerts you.

As for the Shark IZ662H, I also observed no signs of leaks during the fog test, proving that it has a sealed system. It has three filters: two pre-filters (foam and felt filters) and a post-motor HEPA filter, and according to Shark, they are all washable.

Utilities

Winner: Dyson V15

User Interface

The IZ662H boasts a standout IQ display that’s cleverly situated atop the handheld unit. It keeps you in the loop about the battery life — presented as a percentage — and the suction power and floor type mode selected via two buttons on either side, while the center button turns the vacuum on and off.

The Dyson V15 also has a handy circle LCD screen that shows the power modes used and provides an estimated battery life in minutes. It also alerts you when there is a blockage in the floorhead, the filter is installed incorrectly or needs to be cleaned, etc. Better yet, it also gave me in-depth information about the vacuumed dust particles (regarding their size and count) via a bar graph.

Like older Dyson stick vacuums, I found myself having to continually grip a pistol-like trigger to ensure the V15 stayed operational, an experience that quickly wore out my hands. Many trigger-equipped models that I’ve tested, such as the Tineco A11 Master, are equipped with a trigger lock feature – a seemingly small addition that makes a world of difference.

Mode

The IZ662H has two surface-type settings (which change the speed of the roller to adapt to the surface type) and three power modes: “Eco,” “Deep Clean,” and “Boost” (which change the vacuum’s suction). You can toggle between them via the buttons on either side.

On the flip side, the Dyson V15 has three suction modes: “Eco,” “Auto,” and “Boost.” The standout feature of this vacuum is the auto mode, where the vacuum can automatically tweak its suction based on the dust density (detected by an onboard piezo sensor).

Headlight

The Dyson V15’s Laser Slim Fluffy floorhead is equipped with a tinny green laser light called “Detech Laser.” When it comes to spotting dirt in poorly lit areas, I found it to be more effective than any LED-outfitted vacuum I’ve tested, including the Shark Vertex. It would be better if the Digital Motorbar were also equipped with this nifty feature.
