Shark IZ462H vs Dyson V8: Who takes the cake? The truth is, it’s a toss-up – both are winners.

The Shark IZ462H is a powerhouse showcasing all the cream of the crop from Shark, boasting features like the DuoClean floorhead, self-cleaning PowerFins roller, and the Multi-Flex system. It is one of the most expensive Shark vacuums, but it’s still considered a bargain compared to Dyson and other heavy-hitters.

The Dyson V8 is an ideal choice for those who love Dyson but can’t stomach the sky-high price tags of the latest models. With a price tag that doesn’t break the bank, it delivers outstanding performance on all types of surfaces and comes equipped with a top-notch set of attachments.

Shark IZ462H Vs Dyson V8: Differences

I call this battle a tie – each has its own strengths. Now, the question remains: which one is the right fit for you? Keep reading to discover the answer!

Cleaning Performance

Winner: Tie

Cleaning Head

The Dyson V8 comes out of the box with two cleaning heads: a Fluffy cleaner head and a Motorbar cleaner head. Note that you only get this duo if you opt for the Absolute version. Other models in the line-up, including the V8 Origin and the V8 Animal, lack the Fluffy floorhead.

The Shark IZ462H, on the other hand, features a DuoClean cleaning head, including a soft roller on the front and a spiral rubberized brush roll in the center. This 2-in-1 system basically does the job of both cleaning heads that come with the Dyson V8. So you don’t need to swap floorheads when moving from hard floor to carpet and vice versa.

Hard Floor Test

My examinations showed that these machines work great on this type of surface. The Shark IZ462H easily picked up 99% of both large and small debris, with the residual being swiftly sucked up during a second sweep. Similarly, the Dyson V8 smoothly collected all the large particles, leaving a mere 3% of the finer debris behind.

Carpets

On my low-pile carpet, the Shark IZ462H effortlessly gathered 100% of the larger debris but only collected around 92% of the finer particles. Switching to my plush high-pile carpet, it breezily dispatched all the larger debris but left around 4% of the smaller particles behind.

The Dyson V8, on the other hand, edged ahead slightly in these tests. Regardless of whether it was tackling a low-pile or high-pile carpet, it successfully eliminated around 99% of debris.

Hair Test

I would say that both the Shark IZ462H vs Dyson V8 are ideal choices for pet owners who have to deal with the messes their furry companions leave behind every day. I found they could pick up all hair and fur on surfaces with ease, and better yet, they are equipped with some kind of anti-tangle technology to prevent vacuumed hair from wrapping around their rollers.

The Shark IZ462H’s DuoClean head, as mentioned above, includes a spiral rubberized brush roll, which is a combination of rubber fins (which are called PowerFins) and short bristles. Although it didn’t entirely prevent hair from wrapping around the roller, it proved effective. Then removing what remained by hand was very easy and quick.

Likewise, the Dyson V8’s carpet floorhead comes armed with de-tangling vanes designed to mitigate hair-wrapping issues as well. This feature is a row of small fangs located behind the roller, and in my experience, it was quite adept at preventing tangles on the roller. Also, the included Hair screw tool did a good job at picking up pet hair on my sofas without tangling.

The Dyson V8, like the rest of the Dyson stick line-up, comes with a wall charging station. Simply follow the user’s manual to fasten it to your wall, and voila – you have a secure and tidy spot to store and juice up your vacuum. It only accommodates two attachments, though, so you’ll need to scout out a safe place for the others.

Yet, if drilling into your immaculate wall doesn’t sit well with you, I’ve got an alternate way: you can hook the charger directly into the handheld portion and stash the rest somewhere.

The Shark IZ462H, on the other hand, doesn’t come with any wall mounts. This one is perhaps too heavy or large for this storage option. But that doesn’t matter since it has a MultiFLEX wand that can bend a full 180 degrees. In the Flex configuration, the Shark IZ462H can be stored in the vertical position with the vertical footprint halved. It would, however, be an added bonus to have onboard storage for some attachments.

Weight & Maneuverability

Coming in at approximately 5.75 lbs, the Dyson V8 falls on the lighter end of the stick spectrum, though it doesn’t claim the title of the lightest Dyson stick – that honor goes to the Dyson V12. Maneuvering and carrying it around is very easy, and when transformed into a handheld setup, I found myself able to clean my ceiling for long periods of time without experiencing any discomfort.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Shark IZ462H weighs 9.05 pounds, making it one of the heaviest vacuum sticks I’ve tested. But maneuvering this beast is not as difficult as it seems. It didn’t feel burdensome in my hand, likely due to the bulky DuoClean head that distributed most of the vacuum’s weight downward, alleviating strain on my grip. Once converted into a portable handheld vacuum, it does become noticeably lighter, but it remains heavier than the Dyson V8. When tackling tasks such as cleaning overhead areas like the ceiling, I frequently switched hands to avoid fatigue.

Regarding cleaning under furniture, the Shark IZ462H’s Multi-Flex wand could flex up to a 90-degree angle, allowing me to access low areas without crouching down too much. This design is a panacea for the elderly or those with bad backs. The Dyson V8 has no such wand, but it comes with an up-top adapter that can help achieve the same outcome.

Battery Life

The Shark IZ462H boasts an impressive runtime of 60 minutes, while the Dyson V8 offers a commendable 40-minute. But it’s important to note that these impressive durations can be achieved when utilizing a non-motorized tool and running the vacuums at their lowest power settings. In fact, that’s not a typical cleaning scenario, right? I conducted tests with both models using the floor head, and here are the results I obtained:

Shark IZ462HDyson V8
Maximum Battery Life≈ 43 mins≈ 25 mins
Minimum Battery Life≈ 13 mins≈ 7 mins
Charging Time≈ 3.2 hours≈ 5 hours

The Dyson V8 has unimpressive battery life, and it further disappoints with its use of a screw-in battery instead of the click-in one found in newer models. So you can’t extend its runtime by swapping batteries, which can be a significant disadvantage for some users, especially those who live in mammoth-sized apartments.

The Shark IZ462H, on the other hand, comes with a removal battery. So, by spending money on an extra battery (buy on Amazon), you can vacuum with twice the battery life  – say goodbye to interrupting due to frequent recharging.

Dustbin & Filtration System

Winner: Tie

The Shark IZ462H’s dust cup has a capacity of 0.32 liter, which is not large. So if you use it to clean a large area, be prepared to empty out the contents more frequently. Emptying it is pretty easy: remove the wand from the portable part and push down a slider on the side. I had to remove some of the large lumps of hair that wrapped around the mesh filter manually, but this wasn’t majorly inconvenient.

On the other hand, the Dyson V8 boasts a more generous dust tank with a capacity of 0.54 liters. When it needed to be emptied, I just had to pull a vast red tab (with a bin icon) on the handheld device. This mechanism was simple and worked well.

The Dyson V8 boasts a sealed filtration system with two filters: a pre-motor filter and a post-motor (HEPA) filter. This system ensures all the tiny particles will be removed from the air passing through the unit. This combination of a sealed system and HEPA filter is, no doubt, especially beneficial in homes with allergy or asthma sufferers. Both filters are washable and reusable, so you don’t have to replace them when they are dirty.

The Shark IZ462H also features a sealed system (called “Complete Seal Technology” by Shark), ensuring unfiltered air cannot escape the vacuum as well. It has three filters: two pre-motor filters and one post-motor (HEPA) filter. All of them are rinsable.

Utilities

Winner: Shark IZ462H

User Interface & Control Method

The Dyson V8 doesn’t come packed with any fancy high-tech screens like its successors (starting from the Dyson V11). To keep it running continually, I had to maintain my index finger on a pistol-like trigger, which became a little uncomfortable after about 15 minutes. I would have liked it if it had a trigger lock feature like the Tineco Pure ONE S12. There is a binary slide switch on top that enables activation of the max mode.

As for the Shark IZ462H, the power controls are very simple and easy to use. There is a slider, easily accessed by my thumb, that sits on top of the handheld unit used to toggle between two modes: one for hard floors and one for carpets. This action doesn’t alter the vacuum’s suction – it just changes the spin speed of the roller. Additionally, there is a Dyson-like trigger within reach of the index finger. Pulling it will activate the Boost power mode.

Headlights

The final thing that the Shark IZ462H has over its opponent is that its nozzle has some LED headlights. These lights automatically turn on when the vacuum is in operation and can’t be switched off while the vacuum is running. They prove to be extremely useful when vacuuming in areas with low lighting or when cleaning behind or under furniture.
