Both the Shark AZ2002 vs Dyson Ball Animal 2 are designed to help users ease the burden of house cleaning. But the first one outperforms the other, which is also why it’s more expensive.
The Shark AZ2002 is one of Shark’s priciest uprights, but it’s a worthwhile purchase. Besides the insanely strong suction, it has some conveniences, such as the powered lift-away feature and LED lights.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is also designed to help you complete your daily cleaning tasks faster and less tediously. Given the high price, it should have features like LED headlights and automatic wire management. But if you’re fine without them, you’ll be good to go with this model.

Shark AZ2002 vs Dyson Ball Animal 2: Similarities
The Shark AZ2002 wins 3-1 against the Dyson Ball Animal 2 thanks to its better overall performance, especially its ability to limit tangled hair thanks to the self-cleaning brush roll. Moreover, it has some LED bulbs on the front and can be used as a semi-handheld vacuum.
Cleaning Performance
Winner: Shark AZ2002
To my mind, the Shark AZ2002 is among the upright vacuums with the best suction on the market, so it can pick up almost all small to medium-sized debris on hard floors and carpets. So you’ll want to avoid using it near things like Lego blocks, coins, or long strings, or they’ll get stuck in the floorhead or even damage your vacuum.
However, its strong suction made it drag me a bit, and after I was done using it for too long, my arm and lower back started to tire, although my body had built up a bit of strength thanks to testing a lot of vacuums.
Also, I was surprised at how well the Shark AZ2002 captured hair. Better yet, it threw most of the sucked hair into the dust tank thanks to something called a “self-cleaning brush roll.” There was still a minor amount of hair wrapped around the roller, but not much, which means less maintenance.
As for the Dyson Ball Animal 2, its power suction puts many other uprights I’ve tested to shame. It removed almost all debris of all sizes from my hard floor from the first pass, and it didn’t take me long to get my floor looking and feeling like new.
This Dyson Ball Animal 2 was easy to maneuver on my carpet, but its self-adjusting brush roller seemed to ride on top of the carpet pile rather than digging in and pulling out dirt as the AZ2002 did. Anyway, it did an excellent job of pulling up most of the hair, dust, dirt, sand, and more from my carpet.
The brush roll of the Dyson Ball Animal 2 isn’t designed to limit hair wrap like the AZ2002’s self-cleaning brush roll. Unfortunately, the brush roll can’t be removed from the main head, so clearing any hair wraps and stuck-on debris is not easy.
Dimensions And Weight
Winner: Shark AZ2002
The dimensions of the Shark AZ2002 vs Dyson Ball Animal 2 are 15 x 12 x 46.2 inches and 42.13 x 13.39 x 16.93 inches, respectively. These machines are bulky, but onboard accessory storage makes up for that. I wish they included a bag to hold all of the attachments.
Both the Shark AZ2002 vs Dyson Ball Animal 2 are pretty heavy (16.38 pounds and 17.2 pounds, respectively). There are differences here, but they are generally on the heavy side. Carrying them around can be a workout for some people, not to mention their insanely strong suction makes them harder to push on carpets.
The Shark AZ2002 is lighter, and it can be used as a portable vacuum. So I give it the nod here.
Dust tank And Filter
Winner: Dyson Ball Animal 2
Regarding dust cup capacity, the Dyson Ball Animal 2 takes the lead with a 0.32-gallon dust cup, larger than the cup of the AZ2002, which holds just up to 0.25 gallons of dirt and debris. Both are easy to empty and made of clear plastic, allowing you to check how full they are at a glance.
Both the Shark AZ2002 vs Dyson Ball Animal 2 have pre-motor filters, and post-motor (HEPA) filters to keep up to 99.9% of dust and allergens out of the air. They are both removable and washable and should be rinsed to maintain good suction whenever you find them dirty.
The Shark AZ2002 is equipped with anti-allergen complete seal technology to ensure nothing can escape before being trapped by the filters. The Dyson Ball Animal 2, as far as I know, is equipped with something similar, and it also does a great job of preventing allergens from escaping into the air.
Special Features
Winner: Shark AZ2002
Setting Surface Type
The AZ2002’s handle has a slider that allows you to choose between three floor-type settings: “Hard Floor,” “Carpet / Low Pile,” and “Thick Carpet / Area Rug.” I believe this is a significant improvement over many other Shark models, which have a switch on the body that requires you to bend over to press for the same purpose. Also, the power button is just above the slider.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 sports an automatically adjusting head, which will move up and down automatically as you move from carpet to hard floor and vice versa. The Dyson will self-adjust, so it has no button or slider like the AZ2002. All you need to do is turn off its brush roll to vacuum floors.
LED Headlights
The Dyson Ball Animal 2, unlike the AZ2002, has no LED headlights on the front. I became accustomed to the LEDs on the nozzles of Shark vacuums, which illuminate all hair and dust in dimly lit areas. So I’m a bit annoyed that such an expensive model lacks this nifty feature. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but for the cash they ask for this model, throwing some LED light bulbs on the front of it is essential.
Alternative Configuration
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 has no alternate configuration, and you can just use its hose/wand to vacuum instead of its cleaner head. Thus, cleaning the stairs and tight spaces is arduous as this machine is bulky and heavy.
Deploying its accessory hose isn’t particularly enjoyable, although it’s not difficult. You need to pop the vented top cap, release the wand/hose using a button, and finally pull the wand/hose combination from the rest of the handle.
On the flip side, like most Shark upright vacuums, the AZ2002 can be turned into a semi-handheld vacuum for cleaning hard-to-reach places. All you need to do is pick up its canister and hold it with one hand while vacuuming with its wand or hose.
It also has a powered lift-away feature that lets you clean under furniture with the floorhead after you take the pod off. I believe this is one of the selling points of the AZ2002 because normal upright vacuums usually can’t go under a table or couch due to their bulky size.
