It’s time for the most complete and honest review of the debate of Shark AZ1002 vs Dyson Animal 2! I will keep it as brief and as useful as possible. Finally, after months of cleaning my house with these upright not-cheap vacuums, I can confirm that Shark AZ1002 is the absolute winner and a beast at cleaning pet hair!
The winner Shark AZ1002 is designed to tackle all kinds of debris efficiently, and to my expectation, it does! The device can remove from microdust to large snack pieces without leaving any crumb, all thanks to its DualClean brushroll that sweeps, sucks, and polishes. Also, it boasts a bright headlight that allows me to detect any spot that needs more cleaning. So, if you need a good vacuum that never lets you down, choose AZ1002!
As for Dyson Ball Animal 2, its suction power is one of the greatest, which explains why it doesn’t struggle much against most debris sizes. Its anti-tangle brushroll also makes it easier to keep the airflow strong and consistent without clogging the entrance. However, it’s a very heavy vacuum that can’t be put into hand-held mode. And it doesn’t have to swiftest swivel steering performance. Still worth the shot, anyway!

Shark AZ1002 vs Dyson Animal 2: Differences
Shark AZ1002 wins 3-1 and ties once against Dyson Ball Animal 2 thanks to its many benefits: LED headlights, strong airflow against large piles of debris, dual brushrolls, and many more details. Check out my full review to know the pros and cons of both devices.
Cleaning performance
Winner: Shark AZ1002
With strong suction power, the pair cleans very well against microdust and slightly larger debris. Cooperating with the brushrolls, these vacuums can easily pick up short to long pet hair from carpets. I have tried it against low and high-pile carpets with both cat and dog hair, and the result has been amazing! I can reveal the strands and pick them up from the dense fibers much quicker than expected.
But, I prefer Shark AZ1002 more due to its 3 levels of cleaning that different tackle kinds of debris and floor types. The modes will adjust the head height as well.
With Dyson Animal Ball 2, it comes with an automatically adjusted height, depending on the density of the surface below and how you handle the device. It’s convenient but sometimes stuck on thicker carpets. So I still prefer to adjust the floor nozzle manually.
Utilities
Winner: Shark AZ1002
It came across as a surprise to me that Dyson Ball Animal 2 doesn’t have LED headlights due to its hefty price tag. So it tranquils much more that, on the contrary, its opponent Shark AZ1002 doesn’t miss the mark with its bright headlights. I can see how dirty the floor is with ease. And it’s much more effortless to detect a spot I missed. The price tag of Animal 2 would be more reasonable if it had LED headlights.
Another benefit that AZ1002 boasts are the swift swivel steering action. And even though Dyson Animal 2 has the same function, its design with the giant ball makes the movement not very smooth. And since vacuuming has a lot to do with steering and twisting the wrist to clean every nook and cranny, I prefer working with AZ1002 for its mobility.
Special technology
Winner: Shark AZ1002
Shark AZ1002 wins the round thanks to its DualClean brushroll, which I really enjoy working with! It’s not my first time encountering a brushroll with a special design, but it’s definitely on my top list of smart features for vacuums.
The dual brushroll system consists of 1 bristle brush and 1 soft brush. Each has its own cleaning purpose. While the bristles of the back brush lift, remove, and guide dust and debris into the intake port, the soft brush simultaneously breaks down dry dirt and polishes the floor. The combination results in an amazingly spotless floor! Furthermore, the brushroll is designed to self-clean. I barely have to remove hair from it ever.
That said, Dyson Ball Animal 2 also boasts an anti-tangle brush that is worth mentioning. It shares the same result as the self-cleaning brush of the opponent Shark, which is very scarce manual unclogging. But compared to Shark AZ1002, it lacks the polishing aspect, which leaves the floor very clean and crumb-free.
Filtration system and dirt bin
Tie
Both vacuums are equipped with a HEPA filter that eliminates up to 99.9% of debris and allergens, as tested. Since I can’t carry out such a detailed and precise investigation, I can only evaluate the filters’ performance from my experience as a user with a sensitive respiratory system. And so far, no allergic reaction or uncontrollable waves of sneezing has washed over me. The filter traps the dirty particles well!
According to the design, all the dust and debris will go through 2 sections of filters: the premotor filters and the HEPA one, which is post-motor. From what I can see with my naked eyes, there is almost no dust coming out via the exhaust port when I clean, avoiding dust cloud formation. This is the biggest proof of the HEPA’s performance!
Regarding the dust containers’ capacity, Shark comes with a 0.22 gal one, while Dyson boasts a bigger 0.32 gal bin. So, it’s clear that the latter can handle a larger workload, which is one of the biggest benefits that Animal 2 offers. However, this also means that Dyson is heavier to push around, and I have experienced it first-hand.
Cord and hose length
Winner: Dyson Animal 2
In this regard, Dyson Animal 2 has the higher ground. Sharing the same 30ft cord length, Dyson and Shark both don’t require users to plug and unplug too many times to finish cleaning a large surface. But, Dyson Animal 2 boasts a much longer hose, which is 9.22 ft. As for Shark AZ1002, the hose is only 5.5 ft.
This is very understandable because Animal 2 isn’t a lift-away vacuum, so the reach depends entirely on the hose and cord lengths. As for Shark AZ1002, since it can shift into a hand-held mode, the shorter hose isn’t a big inconvenience. But of course, I would still prefer a longer flexible hose.
