I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

If you’re looking for a lift-away upright vacuum for pet owners, consider the Shark AZ1002 vs AZ2002 duo. The following article is my personal opinion after trying them out. If you want to find a vacuum with great cleaning performance, I recommend the AZ2002. And if you want a machine that contains more utilities, I would recommend the AZ1002.

Despite sharing a lot of similarities such as body styles, lift-away mode, dirt compartment, and HEPA filtration system, Shark AZ1002 is still slightly ahead of its opponent thanks to its Power Lift-away feature, convenience design, and low noise.

Shark AZ2002 also performs really great. It made a big impression on me because of its ability to clean multi-surfaces extremely effectively. Honestly, it and the AZ1002 are six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Shark AZ1002 vs AZ2002: Differences

After looking at the differences between the two machines, I concluded, Shark AZ1002 ties 1:1 against Shark AZ2002. These machines all have very good cleaning performance and smart designs. For more detailed information, please read the analysis below.

Cleaning performance

The winner: Shark AZ2002

Compatible Floor Type

Both Shark AZ1002 and AZ2002 work well on many other surfaces, such as hardwood floors, tile floors, low-pile carpets, shag carpets, and more.

In the cereal, sugar, rice, and full-sized Froot Loops vacuuming tests on hard floors, tile floors, low-pile carpets, and high-pile carpets, I found the AZ2002 outperformed the AZ1002. In fact, both machines do very well, with a speck of dirt and debris pick-up efficiency of 95%, even when cleaning deep-pile carpets. But overall, Shark AZ2002 still has a better performance. This one leaves less dirt and moves more easily when you roll them on the floor.

If you do not already know, their amazing vacuuming performance comes from the DouClean technology. It is represented by the distinct design of the cleaner head, which has two brush rolls. These brush rolls work synergistically to increase carpet deep cleaning, bare floor polishing, and large debris collection.

Pet hair performance

These machines are good at picking up pet hair. This is thanks to the DouClean technology and Self-cleaning brush rolls. While the DouClean technology helps the vacuum cleaner dig deep into carpets, the brush rolls are perfectly tangle-resistant. I tested the pet hair performance of these machines and found Shark AZ2002 to be superior. Let me show you the differences.

The DouClean Brushrolls of Shark AZ2002
The DouClean Brushrolls of Shark AZ2002

There’s no distinction between the soft brush rolls at the front, so I’ll just focus on the roller behind. The AZ1002 comes with a stiff roller, and the AZ2002 comes with a PowerFin roller. The stiff roller includes rubber blades and stiff brushes, while the PowerFin roller includes rubber blades and soft brushes. It seems that replacing the hard brush with a soft brush makes the machine pick up pet hair better, smother, and less tangled.

Also, when looking at the pet tool’s performance, I also found that the AZ2002 performed better. Although the motorized pet tool of the AZ1002 picks up hair very powerfully and quickly, a lot of hairs get stuck on the brush roll after finishing vacuuming. And you know, it’s quite annoying to take them off. Meanwhile, the AZ2002 only owns a “common” pet tool but has good cleaning ability and especially almost no hair stuck on the roller.

Dirt bin and FIltration

Tie

Dirt tank

These machines have the same dirt compartment structure. It is a transparent dust cup and has a full indicator line on it. These cups have a similar capacity and are large enough that you don’t have to empty them regularly. In addition, they are easy to disassemble and clean.

To disassemble the dust container, hold the handle on its top with one hand, press the “dust cup release” button on the side with the other hand, and then lift it up. To empty the dirt cup, hold it above a trash can, press the button to open the lid at the bottom, and all the dirt will fall out into the trash can. Remember to keep the dirt tank a little near the trash to make sure all the dust and debris gets in there instead of scattered around.

Filtration

These two machines share the same filtration system. This system includes one post-motor filter and two pre-motor filters. All of these filters are easy to access and maintain.

The post-filter is a HEPA filter, which can capture 99.97% of strong airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, such as dust, mold, pollen, bacteria, pet dander, and so on. HEPA filters are very good at filtering the air, so they are perfect for people who have allergies or respiratory problems.

The HEPA filter is located on the front of the vacuum cleaner, just above the cleaner head. Shark recommends users clean this filter once a year. However, you should check it every few months, and when you find it too dirty, clean it. This filter can be rinsed with cold water and you need to let it dry for at least 24 hours before putting it back into the vacuum.

The pre-motor filter contains a foam filter and a felt filter. They are all located below the dirt compartment. You need to wash them about every three months.

Additionally, these filtration systems come with Anti-Allergen Seal Technology. Let me explain. All the air entering the vacuum is forced through all of those filters before they exit the machine. If you don’t have a sealed system, unfiltered air can leak out through poor-quality seals or cracks in the vacuum cleaner body.

Design and convenience

The winner: Shark AZ1002

Build quality

These machines have the same body style. They are quite sturdy even though most of the bodies are made from plastic. Almost everything is pre-assembled out of the box, so it just takes less than 5 minutes to snap everything together.

They all have a 30-foot power cord, long enough to clean a large room without wasting time searching for an outlet. Their hose is less than 6 feet long, I personally find that a bit short, and I know of many other machines with much longer hoses.

The controls on the handle of Shark AZ1002
The controls on the handle of Shark AZ1002

Their controls are concentrated on the handle and on the top of the canister. The handle includes the power button, and the button to adjust the suction modes. Both machines have headlights, especially the AZ1002 has a LED light on the handle. I like this detail because it allows you to illuminate your path no matter what tool you are using.

Maneuverability

To be frank, these machines aren’t lightweight, they’re all around 16 pounds. Fortunately, the lift-away function has helped to reduce their heavyweight significantly. In addition, their design is quite compact, so it is relatively easy to get them into small corners of the house such as under tables, under chairs, and among other furniture.

Speaking of lift-away, this feature helps users to use their upright vacuum cleaner as a handheld vacuum. You can hold the lift-away pod with one hand while the other hand uses the cleaner head/wand/hose/tools. Therefore, you can carry the device everywhere, as long as it is within range of the power cord. I like to use this function to clean my stairs.

In addition, their machine head can be rotated left and right very flexibly, so it is very useful when cleaning under furniture.

Noise level

There is no vacuum cleaner that does not make noise and so are these two. However, according to what I measured, Shark AZ1002 is quieter than Shark AZ2002.

The noise level of Shark AZ1002 ranges from 72 to 76 dB, while the average noise level of AZ2002 is about 77.5 dB. Note that the level of a vacuum cleaner depends on the surface it is sucking on.

In my opinion, their noise level is acceptable. It’s just a little louder than normal chatter and isn’t annoying at all, especially when they have such a good cleaning performance.
