I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

In the showdown between the Kobold VB100 vs Dyson V15, both models stand out as exceptional cordless stick vacuums with remarkable cleaning performance on various surfaces.

The Dyson V15 emerges as a strong competitor with its impressive suction power, laser-guided navigation, and real-time dirt detection features. The vacuum excels on hardwood floors thanks to its slim fluffy cleaning head and performs admirably on both low and high-pile carpets. In addition, the V15’s advanced features make it an attractive option for those looking for a high-end stick vacuum.

The Kobold VB100 shines with its ability to tackle hard floors and short pile carpets effectively, removing fine and coarse dirt without the sweat. However, the vacuum does face some challenges when cleaning a long pile of carpeting and smaller areas like stairs, which is something to consider based on your specific needs.

Kobold VB100 Vs Dyson V15: Differences

Well, I must say that this comparison involves two high-end stick vacuums, making it challenging to determine a clear winner. However, after a thorough examination and extensive use, the Dyson V15 emerges as the victor with a score of 2-0 and two ties. This impressive performance is primarily attributed to its superior cleaning capabilities, advanced features, and versatility across various surfaces.

Cleaning performance

Tie!

Suction power on different floor types

Dyson V15: Cleaning on hard floor
Dyson V15: Cleaning on the hard floor

Over the years, the Kobold VB100 has been a standout performer on hard floors. I’ve been impressed by its ability to effectively remove both fine and coarse dirt, like sand and lentils, without any issues. It’s also done a great job on short pile carpets, removing up to 94% of sand and most other types of dirt. However, its performance on short pile carpets isn’t as good as on hard floors.

Regarding long pile carpeting, I was a bit disappointed with the VB100. It struggled to remove oat flakes and took longer to clean than other surfaces. Even so, the VB100 achieved a commendable 95% average cleaning result.

One limitation of the VB100 is cleaning smaller areas, such as stairs. Holding the vacuum was challenging, and the EBB100 brush didn’t fit well on small treads. Another drawback is its low-mode performance, which is somewhat poor compared to Dyson clones.

The Dyson V15 is one of the most powerful cordless vacuums I’ve used, boasting 230 AW. In addition, its advanced features, like laser-guided navigation and real-time dirt detection, make cleaning a breeze.

On hardwood floors, the V15’s slim fluffy cleaning head worked wonders. It removed 100% of all four debris types and had no issues cleaning up to the edges. The soft roller cleaning head is a significant advantage for the V15 on hardwood floors. It’s great to see the Fluffy cleaning head making a return on this model.

The Dyson V15 performed well on both low and high-pile carpets, too. It occasionally missed kitty litter and sugar during my tests, but overall, it did an excellent job.

Suction control

The Kobold VB100 has two controls that adjust the suction power. The main power button lets you choose between soft (30W), medium (80W), or max (230W) suction modes, and the EBB100 brush has a button that gives you three modes: normal (default for hard floors), turbo (for carpets and very dirty areas), and off (for delicate areas or deep pile carpets).

This feature is great as it allows me to adjust the suction power depending on the surface I am cleaning. For example, when I clean delicate surfaces, I switch to the soft suction mode, while the max setting works great for carpets and dirty areas.

On the other hand, the Dyson V15 has an automatic suction control feature that is quite impressive. It has three cleaning modes – Eco, Auto, or Boost – that can easily adjust the suction level. The internal Piezo sensor detects the type of debris on the floor and adjusts the suction accordingly.

I greatly value the Dyson V15’s ability to adapt efficiently to various surfaces, saving me significant time and effort daily. Unlike with the Kobold VB100, I don’t need to switch between suction modes as frequently. This not only conserves battery life but also reduces unnecessary power consumption. This function proves to be especially beneficial for those with multiple flooring types in their large homes.

Dirt container and filtration

Tie!

Kobold VB100: Bag design
Kobold VB100: Bag design

The Kobold VB100 has a bagged dirt container with a capacity of 0.8 liters. Unfortunately, this means you have to replace the bag when it is full, which adds to the cost of using this vacuum. However, the bag also has some advantages: it prevents dust from escaping when you empty it, which is good for allergy sufferers, and it is easy to fit and remove with a plastic cover that snaps into place.

The Dyson V15 has a bagless dirt container with HEPA filters and a capacity of 0.757 liters. This means you don’t have to buy any bags, saving you money and reducing waste. However, the bagless container also has some drawbacks: it can be messy to empty, especially if you have a lot of fine dust or pet hair, and it requires regular filter cleaning to maintain suction power.

Both vacuums have pros and cons when it comes to their dirt containers. The Kobold VB100 is more convenient and hygienic for disposing of dust but more expensive and wasteful in the long run. The Dyson V15 is more economical and eco-friendly but has more hassle and maintenance in terms of emptying and cleaning.

On a personal note, I favor the Dyson V15 due to its cost-effectiveness and the absence of disposable bags. Cleaning the filter doesn’t bother me, either. Nonetheless, given its user-friendliness and suitability for allergy sufferers, I understand why others might opt for the Kobold VB100. Ultimately, determining the most important aspects of a vacuum cleaner for your needs is a decision in your hands.

Design & Convenience

The winner: Dyson V15

Noise level

Starting with the Kobold VB100, I’ve found that it operates at an average noise level of 72 dB. During my years of usage, I noticed that its consistent sound level makes it comfortable for everyday cleaning tasks without causing too much disturbance. This vacuum is particularly suitable for households that prefer a steady noise level while vacuuming.

On the other hand, the Dyson V15 offers more flexibility in terms of noise levels. I’ve experienced that in Eco Mode, the vacuum operates at a quieter 71 dB, making it ideal for light cleaning or use in noise-sensitive environments.

However, as you switch to Auto mode, the noise level increases to 74 dB, which is still acceptable for most users. Lastly, when using the Boost mode, the vacuum produces a more robust sound at 76 dB, which is understandable given the increased suction power for more challenging cleaning tasks.

Weight

The Kobold VB100 weighs 7.3 lbs, compared to the Dyson V15, which weighs only 6.8 lbs. This difference in weight may not seem significant, but over time, using a slightly lighter vacuum can be less tiring and more comfortable.

In my experience, carrying around a heavier vacuum for extended periods can be straining, especially when cleaning larger spaces. The lighter weight of the Dyson V15 makes it more comfortable to use for longer periods and reduces the strain on my arms, shoulders, and back.

On the flip side, a heavier vacuum generally means better build quality, with more durable materials used in the construction. The Kobold VB100 is built with high-quality materials and a strong motor, which is one of the reasons why it weighs slightly more, and it feels robust and durable in my hands.

Battery

Dyson V15: Battery needs to be charged
Dyson V15: Battery needs to be charged

The battery is an important factor when buying a cordless vacuum, as it determines how long you can clean without interruption and how often you need to recharge. Both the Kobold VB100 and the Dyson V15 have detachable and rechargeable batteries, but they differ in capacity, runtime, and charging time.

The Kobold VB100 features an exchangeable battery with a capacity of 74.8 Wh. In my experience, the typical usage involves medium power combined with the EBB100 in normal or turbo mode, providing between 25 and 30 minutes of operation before recharging. However, the battery performance varies depending on the mode used:

  • Soft: 44 minutes
  • Medium: 32 minutes
  • Max: 12 minutes

Charging the battery takes around three hours. In addition, the exchangeable battery feature allows for continuous cleaning with a spare battery, which is a significant advantage when considering the higher price of the Kobold VB100.

On the other hand, the Dyson V15 offers up to 60 minutes of cleaning per charge at a lower price point. During my time using this model, here is the result:

  • Eco Mode: 68 minutes, 30 seconds
  • Auto/Medium Mode: 45 minutes, 30 seconds
  • Boost Mode: 8 minutes, 55 seconds

The tests mentioned above were conducted using the High Torque cleaner head, with the trigger held continuously from 100% power until the battery died. The Dyson V15’s battery capacity is 91 Wh.

In summary, the Kobold VB100 provides a solid battery performance with the added benefit of an exchangeable battery. This feature can justify the higher price for those who value the convenience of uninterrupted cleaning with a spare battery.

The Dyson V15, however, offers a longer runtime overall at a lower price, making it an attractive option for those seeking both value and extended battery life. Your choice should be based on your cleaning requirements, battery longevity, exchangeability preferences, and budget.

For me, I prefer the Dyson V15 for its longer runtime and higher suction power. I don’t mind waiting a bit longer for it to charge, as I usually plan my cleaning ahead.

Maneuverability

The Kobold VB100 stands upright without the support, which is tremendously helpful for storage in tight spaces. Its slim and lightweight design makes it to push around. The lack of a fully rotating head may limit maneuvering in cluttered areas or around obstacles. While its balance is optimized, vacuuming or hitting bigger debris could potentially impact stability.

In contrast, the Dyson V15 offers a more versatile maneuverability with its excellent movement on all floors and a fully rotating head, allowing easy navigation. It can gracefully move over cords or around furniture. However, its stand-alone ability seems more modest as it only stands up on its own, lacking the self-support of the VB100. Its maneuverability also relies on its lighter weight, which could compromise larger volumes or less frequent emptying.

Utility

The winner: Dyson V15

LCD display

The Kobold VB100 doesn’t have an LCD, so you have to control it using buttons on the vacuum. It’s not a deal-breaker for me, but it would be nice to have a display that shows things like suction power, battery level, or if there are any issues with the filter. However, in my experience, the lack of an LCD display on the Kobold VB100 doesn’t really affect its excellent cleaning performance.

Now, the Dyson V15 is a different story. It has a high-resolution screen that displays important information such as power, battery life, and even issues with the filter. This display is super helpful in keeping an eye on the vacuum’s functions and maintenance status.

Plus, the vacuum has a sensor that displays on the screen the number and size of dust particles it picks up. I know it sounds kind of gimmicky, but I find it interesting to see how much dirt and dust are in my home.

Attachments

Kobold VB100: Attachment

The Kobold VB100 comes with a single accessory, which can be limiting for cleaning different surfaces or reaching tight corners. While the vacuum’s performance is still excellent with this tool, the lack of attachments can be a downside, especially if you have several surfaces to clean or need to clean sensitive surfaces with care. Otherwise, you can buy some attachment sets from the brand website. But, of course, it would be really costly.

Conversely, the Dyson V15 comes with about seven different tools that provide options for cleaning various surfaces and hard-to-reach areas.
