Kobold VB100 Vs Dyson V11: Differences

While the Kobold VB100 commands a higher price point than its rival, the Dyson V11, Dyson’s brand still demonstrates its superiority in cleaning performance and contributes to the draw result.

Cleaning performance

The winner: Kobold VB100

Suction power and control

After putting both the Kobold VB100 and the Dyson V11 to the test, I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with both vacuums. However, regarding suction power, the VB100 was in a class of its own. Under extreme conditions, it managed to rid the floor of an average of 94% of the dirt – a feat that places it firmly in the premium category.

When it comes to controls, the Kobold VB100 has two main buttons. The first button is the main power button, which allows you to select between three suction modes: soft (30W), medium (80W), and max (230W). The second button is for the EBB100 brush, which also offers three modes: normal (for hard floors), turbo (for carpets and heavily soiled areas), and off (for delicate areas or deep pile carpets, where you need to hold down the button).

On the other hand, Dyson’s V11 vacuum also performed incredibly well, and it’s easy to see why it’s a premium product. Its motorized High Torque cleaner head is the main feature that justifies the added cost. This new feature improves on the Direct Drive cleaner head found in the V10 by increasing the surface area and adding an adjustable slider, which can increase or decrease the suction power.

The slider on the Dyson V11 has a “+” setting that blocks two front apertures on the head, resulting in increased suction power. Alternatively, you can slide it towards the “-” setting, which opens up those air inlets and reduces suction power, making it easier to move the vacuum around and lift it off the floor.

The Dyson V11 has three power modes – Eco, Auto, and Boost – each of which may offer different suction levels. Boost mode offers the highest suction power, providing an impressive 185 Air Watts, increasing from the V10’s maximum of 151 Air Watts in Max mode.

Compatible floor type

Dyson V11: Cleaning performance
Dyson V11: Cleaning performance

In my experience with the Vorwerk VB100, it proved to be an exceptional performer when it came to cleaning hard floors. Its ability to remove all sorts of dirt, ranging from fine sand to coarse lentils, was truly impressive. But, I must say, its efficiency took me aback.

The Kobold VB100 also fared well when cleaning short pile carpets, with a remarkable 94% of the sand being eliminated. It was quite effective at removing other dirt types, too. However, its performance on carpets did not match that on hard floors, which was slightly disappointing.

As for long pile carpeting, the Kobold VB100 fell a little short of my expectations. It took a little longer to remove all the oat flakes, but it still managed to achieve an impressive average of 95%.

On the downside, I did face some difficulties when trying to clean smaller areas like stairs with the VB100, as it was difficult to hold, and the brush did not fit onto the small treads of the stairs in my Victorian home. The low mode performance was also not up to the mark and comparable to the Dyson clones.

Now, onto the Dyson V11. Its Dynamic Load Sensor (DLS) system automatically changes the motor speed depending on the cleaned surface, making it an incredibly powerful cleaning device.

Even without the soft roller heading, the V11 could clean hardwoods without any hassle. However, the Torque Drive cleaning head had a tendency to fling lighter debris across the floor before sucking it up, especially during our rice test.

The V11 performed just as well on high carpet as on the low carpet, capturing 100% of all debris types except for cereal, which still managed to capture an impressive 99%.

Dirt container and filtration

Tie!

The dirt container is an essential feature of any vacuum cleaner, as it holds all the dust, dirt, and debris picked up during cleaning. Kobold VB100 and Dyson V11 are two vacuum cleaners offering different dirt container options.

The Kobold VB100 has a bagged dirt container that holds up to 0.8 liters of dirt. While the bag ensures that fine particles are captured and retained, preventing them from escaping during emptying, it incurs additional costs as you must purchase bags every time they are full.

Kobold VB100: Bag design
Kobold VB100: Bag design

The bags cost around 19 pounds per 5-pack, a considerable amount to consider when deciding what to buy. However, when I emptied the VB100 into a bin, I found that no dust got out, which is a significant advantage if you have allergy sufferers in your household.

On the other hand, the Dyson V11 features a bagless dirt container that holds 0.757 liters of dirt. The bagless system means that the vacuum incurs virtually no recurring costs, and the filter is expected to last the product’s lifetime as long as it’s cleaned regularly.

You can purchase parts directly on Dyson’s website if any details break or need replacement. While the bagless system is cost-effective, emptying the dirt container can be a bit messy as fine dust particles tend to escape during emptying.

In my personal experience, I prefer the Dyson V11’s bagless dirt container as it is more cost-effective in the long run, and I don’t have to worry about purchasing bags every time they’re full. However, bagless ones can be a problem for some allergy sufferers. So this would depend more on your needs and preferences in choosing the bag type of vacuum.

Design & convenience

Noise level

It’s important to take the noise level into account, particularly if you have young children or pets or live in a small apartment with close neighbors. The Kobold VB100 is a good choice for those looking for a cordless vacuum cleaner with a low noise level, with an average noise level of 72 dB. This means that it won’t disturb others and won’t be disruptive in your own living space.

Comparatively, the Dyson V11 has a noise level of 75-78 decibels, slightly louder than the Kobold VB100. However, the Dyson V11 is still relatively quiet, considering its powerful motor, which can contribute to the noise level.

Battery

Kobold VB100: Battery signal
Kobold VB100: Battery signal

The Kobold VB100 boasts an exchangeable battery with a capacity of 74.8 Wh. For an average user, the recommended power mode would be medium, with the EBB100 set to normal or turbo mode, which provides a decent runtime of 25-30 minutes before requiring charging.

On the other hand, the Dyson V11’s powerful motor and vacuum head could lead one to assume that the battery life would be compromised. However, the V11 is equipped with larger lithium-ion cells and advanced battery-saving technology, which helps to maintain battery life.

The vacuum has an impressive runtime of 60 minutes on a full charge, the longest among the three modes. If Boost mode is activated, the V11’s runtime drops to 5-12 minutes, depending on the tool attached. With the High Torque head, the V11 still runs for 60 minutes in Eco mode but goes for up to 12 minutes in Boost mode, a five-minute improvement from the V10.

Unfortunately, the V11 does not have a second battery that can be charged and swapped in to prolong the overall runtime. Regarding charging times, the Kobold VB100 takes three hours to charge, while the Dyson V11 takes 4.5 hours fully.

Maneuverability

The Kobold VB100 has a unique structure that allows it to stand upright without any support, thanks to its slim handle located at the top. This design results in a lower center of gravity and a well-distributed weight that makes vacuuming feel effortless. Not to mention, the slender handle is a delight to grip and enhances the cordless vacuum cleaner’s maneuverability.

As for the Dyson V11, its design allows me to stay in one spot and navigate around chair legs without the need to move to the sides, unlike traditional vacuum cleaners constantly. It even manages to reach under my kitchen cupboards, which my old vacuum couldn’t do.

With my previous vacuum, I had to pause and connect a flexible hose, then drag it around to use the short hose that was attached. It was cumbersome and unpleasant to use.

Utility

The winner: Dyson V11

LCD display

Firstly, the Kobold VB100 doesn’t come with an LCD display. Now, this might not be a big deal for some, but it could be a dealbreaker for those who like to keep track of the remaining cleaning time.

Conversely, the Dyson V11 has a nifty little LCD display at the back of the handle. It shows you the exact minutes and seconds remaining, gives tips on resolving blockages, and even indicates the mode you’re currently using. This is a major improvement from the V10’s simple battery-capacity LEDs, no doubt about it.

I know with the extremely high cost of the VB100, the absence of a digital display on the Kobold VB100 is a drawback. However, others might not see it that way. So it ultimately comes down to personal preference, and whether or not you prioritize having this feature on your vacuum cleaner.

Attachments

Dyson V11: Attachments
Dyson V11: Attachments

I find it intriguing how the Kobold VB100 only comes with one additional attachment, the 2-in-1 accessory nozzle. It’s an amalgamation of a petite crevice nozzle and a brush tool, plus the main electronic brush of the EBB 100. You can find more accessories on the brand’s website, which would make this vacuum pricey.

It’s worth noting that you cannot transform the VB100 into a handheld vacuum, which can be quite inconvenient if you use the brush to clean up a spill on a counter.

You must hold the vacuum cleaner two-handed. Cleaning cobwebs from around the ceiling is a daunting task. So it’s not an ideal vacuum for cleaning your car. If only it had a pull-out hose, it would have been more versatile than handheld cordless vacuum cleaners.

In contrast, the Dyson V11 has a plethora of useful attachments, especially the on-wand storage clip. This transparent plastic organizer sits on the V11’s wand and lets me bring two tools with me anywhere I clean.
