I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

If you are looking for a good stick vacuum cleaner, do not ignore this duo, Dyson V15 vs V8. In my opinion, they all have excellent performance and are worth considering purchasing. However, they still have distinct differences. After experiencing both machines, I conclude the winner is Dyson V15.

Dyson V15 outperforms its opponent thanks to its extremely powerful suction. It can work very well on all surface types. Its battery runs for a long time thanks to the advanced technologies used by the manufacturer to save energy and increase battery life. In addition, it also has an LCD display that allows users to monitor the operation of the machine.

Dyson V8 is the choice for those who like compact design. It’s easy to maneuver around furniture and in tight spaces. The machine comes with a range of cleaning tools that allow users to clean floors, carpets, stairs, furniture, and more.

Dyson V15 vs V8: Differences

After weighing the differences between both machines, I found that Dyson V15 won 3:0 and tied 1 against Dyson V8 thanks to its cleaning performance, convenience, and utilities. Read the breakdown below to learn more details.

Cleaning performance

The winner: Dyson V15

Performance on carpets

In the cleaning test on carpets, both machines work so well with all sizes of debris. They impressively pick up dirt and debris from the carpet surface and deeply clean carpets. Each machine comes with two cleaning heads, a Motorbar™ cleaner head, and a Fluffy cleaner head. I recommend using the Motorbar™ cleaner head to vacuum carpets.

The Motorbar™ cleaner head has a very dense and stiff brush roll which helps it to remove ground-in dirt from carpets. This cleaner head also allows you to move from low-pile carpets to high-pile ones easily. I don’t need to put a lot of effort into pushing the unit on thick carpets like I have to do when using some upright vacuums.

Comparing the Dyson V15 vs V8, the V15 version is somewhat more advanced and modern. With the Dyson V15, the Digital Motorbar™ cleaner head has a switch to adjust gates at the front manually. This feature allows the user to adjust the cleaning head depending on the surface types freely. In addition, the V5 is also equipped with Dyson DLS™ technology, which monitors the brush bar intelligently, adapting power across different floor types when the machine is in auto mode.

Performance on hard floors

With the Motorbar™ cleaner head, the Dyson V8 performs excellently on carpets, but it works well with fine debris on hard floors. This standard cleaner head of Dyson V8 doesn’t offer a surface-type adjustment feature, so the machine still struggles with large debris like Cheerios and Froot Loops. In this case, you need to use the fluffy cleaner head, which is made for cleaning hard floors. With this cleaning head, you can confidently clean everything from dust to large debris. The soft brush roll also polishes the floor effectively without scratching the surface.

As for the Dyson V15, its Digital Motorbar™ cleaner head still works amazingly on hard floors, so I didn’t even need to change the cleaner head when moving from carpets to hard surfaces. This is all thanks to the surface-type adjustment feature, which I mentioned above. However, you can still switch to the fluffy cleaner head if needed.

The fluffy cleaner head of the Dyson V15 is designed to be more compact than the Dyson V8’s. It’s an upgraded version made of soft nylon and anti-static carbon fiber to remove dust from hard floors and narrower gaps. The slim design allows the vacuum to reach further under furniture. Besides, this cleaner head also offers a laser light to highlight dust and hair in dark spaces. The laser is not always on. There is a button to turn it on or off at will. I especially like this feature of the Dyson V15 because my eyesight is not very good.

Pet hair performance

Both machines are great for picking up pet hair. They all have strong suction power and good maneuverability on many types of surfaces, so vacuuming pet hair is not a big deal. Also, each machine is equipped with a suction head with a de-tangling design. A range of hair removal vanes acts as a comb to clean hair from the brush bar. If you are a pet owner, I highly recommend these machines.

Suction power

In this aspect, I would say the Dyson V15 has stronger suction power than the Dyson V8. According to Dyson, the suction power at the boost mode of the V15 model is about 230 AW. Meanwhile, the suction power of the Dyson V8 is 115 AW. For those who haven’t known, air watt (AW) represents the actual suction power of the vacuum as a whole and refers to the power of the motor, battery, and vacuum design combined. The larger the air watt, the greater the suction power.

Dyson V8 has two power settings, “Low” and “High.” Meanwhile, Dyson V15 offers users three options: “Boost,” “Auto,” and “Eco.” If you are in auto mode, the vacuum will adjust the suction up or down depending on if you’re vacuuming hard floors or carpets.

Dirt bin and filtration

Dirt bin

Both machines are bagless vacuums. They store all the dirt and debris in a dust container, which is connected to the main body. The dust container is made of hard plastic. It is transparent, so you can easily check how full it is at any moment.

The Dyson V15’s dirt container is larger than that of the Dyson V8

Regarding capacity, the Dyson V15’s dirt container is larger than that of the Dyson V8. The Dyson V15’s dust container is about 0.76 liters, large enough to clean a house of about 167 square meters (1800 square feet) with only 1 to 2 emptying. Personally, I think such a capacity is good because the structure of a stick vacuum focuses on compactness.

Their dust containers are easy to empty. To remove the dirt container, you need to remove the wand first. After that, hold the dirt container over a trash can, pointing downwards. With the Dyson V8, pull the release catch on the top of the cyclone, then the cyclone will slide up, and the container base will open. The same goes for Dyson V15. All detailed steps are available in the manual.

Filtration

These two machines all come with a HEPA filtration system, which can capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. Dust, bacteria, mold, chalk, pet dander, odors, etc., are trapped by these filters, so this type of filtration system is very friendly to allergy sufferers.

All filters of both machines are washable and reusable. You won’t have to replace them unless they’re broken or torn. Dyson recommends that users clean the filters once a month for the best performance. Just wash them with cold and let them dry completely before putting more packs into the vacuum.

The difference in structure between the two filter systems of these machines is the number of filters. Dyson V8 comes with two filters, one on the cyclone’s top and the other at the back of the unit. Meanwhile, the Dyson V15 has only one filter at the machine’s rear.

Design and convenience

The winner: Dyson V15

Maneuverability

First of all, I would say that both machines have good maneuverability.

In terms of weight, the Dyson V8 weighs 5.6 pounds, while the Dyson V15 weighs 6.8 pounds. In my opinion, the V8 is really compact and lighter than many other powerful Dyson stick vacuums. It doesn’t feel heavy in my hand. In terms of size, the Dyson V8 is a more compact machine. Therefore, it’s really easy for this machine to navigate in the tiniest nooks and crannies.

In addition, these machines all have rotating heads, allowing them to steer around furniture easily. Since they are cordless vacuums, you will not be limited in the cleaning range. Their handles are also pretty sturdy, so users can comfortably carry them from room to room or upstairs.

Moreover, each machine comes with tools and brushes to help clean furniture, stairs, and other tight spaces. This means you can convert your stick vacuum to a handheld vacuum whenever you want. However, the attached tools are not stored on board, which is a bit inconvenient.

Besides, because there is no surface-type adjustment feature, the Dyson V8 is a bit difficult to push on thick carpets. The strong suction power makes it tend to suck on the fibers.

Noise level

Based on what I measured, the two machines have approximately the same noise level, with an average noise level of about 71 dB. They are pretty quiet, in my opinion, especially when you use the fluffy cleaner head. When you vacuum with the multi-surface brushroll, they get a little louder. The noise level also depends on the vacuuming mode you choose.

71 dB is a moderate noise level. It is not considered harmful to your hearing. You can compare this noise level to the sound of a normal conversation. You can still vacuum while talking on the phone, watching TV, or listening to the radio normally.

Battery

Both machines use lithium-ion batteries, which are the most common rechargeable batteries available on the market. The advantage of this type of battery is fast charging time, long life, lightweight, safe, and more.

According to Dyson, the Dyson V15 has a longer run time, up to 60 minutes, while the Dyson V8 battery only lasts up to 40 minutes. On the other hand, Dyson V15 takes less time to charge the battery than Dyson V8 fully. In real life, the battery life may last longer because of the trigger mechanism, meaning you’ll only be wasting battery when pressing the trigger.

With the low power setting and the standard cleaner head, the Dyson V8 runs for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, it just runs for 9 minutes with the high power setting and a cleaner head.

As for the Dyson V15, the machine runs for more than 70 minutes if you use it in the ‘Eco’ mode with no attachments. If you run the vacuum continuously in its high-power ‘Boost’ mode with the motorized head, it will drop to under 10 minutes.

Charger

There are two ways for you to charge these machines. The first way you can use the outlet to charge the battery anywhere in the house. With the second way, you can use the wall-mounted charging dock, which is included in the box. In addition, the Dyson V15 employs a click-in battery pack. This allows the user to charge the battery when the device is turned on or off.

Utilities

The winner: Dyson V15

Battery saving function

The Dyson V15 has a dirt sensor that can adjust suction power based on how dirty the floor is. If it senses dirt being heavier than normal in a certain area, the machine will adjust the suction power based on that. This really helps save battery life. Besides, this sensor is also used to count the number and size of the particles being sucked, and all the information is displayed on the LCD.

In addition, in “Auto” mode, the vacuum will adjust suction power up or down depending on whether you are vacuuming on hard floors or carpets. This feature also optimizes battery life.

LCD display

Dyson V15 has an LCD screen, which displays useful information about the operation of the vacuum cleaner to the user. The information displayed on it includes real-time battery life and the number and size of particles being vacuumed. I don’t think this feature is too necessary, but once you experience it, you will definitely love it.
