Dyson V15 vs Gen5 Detect: The first noticeable distinction is in their nomenclatures. The latter is a ‘Gen’ model instead of a “V” one, but this isn’t a determining factor. The crux of the matter lies in the substantial price difference, with the Gen5 Detect positioned at a higher price point, and I’ll shed some light on whether this one is worth it.
The Dyson Gen5 Detect hit the market in 2022, outshining the Dyson V15 and claiming the title of Dyson’s most advanced and powerful model. It looks like its predecessor but features several commendable enhancements, such as an integrated crevice tool, a bigger battery, a brighter laser light, and no more holding a power trigger down. Aside from the fact that it’s exorbitantly expensive and a bit heavy, I have nothing negative to complain about it.
Although the Dyson V15 is no longer the brand’s top-of-the-line model, it’s still very powerful and can beat almost all the sticks out there. This model is still equipped with the most advanced technology. And on top of that, it is significantly cheaper than the Gen5 Detect. So if you’re not ready to spend close to $1000 on the Gen5 Detect, consider getting this one.

Dyson V15 Vs Gen5 Detect: Differences
The Dyson Gen5 wins 2-1 and has one draw against the V15. For more detailed insights and comprehensive information, let’s delve further into this comparison.
Design & Usability
Winner: Dyson V15
Attachments & Storage
Dyson V15 | Dyson Gen5 Detect |
---|---|
Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head Digital Motorbar cleaner head Hair screw tool Crevice tool Combination tool Mini soft dusting brush Stubborn dirt brush Wand Storage Clip Docking station & Charger Removable battery (x1) | Fluffy Optic cleaner head Digital Motorbar cleaner head Hair screw tool Built-in dusting and crevice tool Combination tool Docking station & Charger Removable battery (x1) |
Both the Dyson V15 vs Gen5 Detect come with a plethora of goodies. The former comes with more accessories, yet the Gen5 Detect truly caught my attention with its unique, built-in dusting and crevice tool, setting a new benchmark in convenience. It comes built-in with the dustbin, so just remove the wand, and you’ll have a ready-to-go dusting or crevice tool for cleaning tight areas.
In the same vein as other Dyson stick models, these machines share a wall mount. Just roll up your sleeves and take some simple steps to affix it to the wall, and you’ll have a safe place to charge the vacuum and keep it out of the curious reach of your pets or little ones.
What the Dyson V15 has in its favor is the option to store two attachments on board via a wand storage clip. Thanks to that, I could keep the hair screw attachment and crevice tool with me throughout the entire vacuuming process. Sadly, the Gen5 Detect lacks this small yet useful tool.
Weight & Maneuverability
With its larger battery and additional plastic components, the Dyson Gen5 Detect tips the scales at roughly 7.7 pounds, landing it on the heavier side of the spectrum. In contrast, the Dyson V15 weighs 6.7 pounds, making it the lighter of the two models. This one-pound variance might be negligible on paper, but it can become a significant factor in the realm of stick vacuums.
In fact, I found both models slightly top-heavy in their fully assembled state, although not overwhelmingly so. Navigating them around proved to be a cinch, courtesy of their swivel heads. But transporting them up and down stairs might pose a challenge for those with physical limitations or for older users, requiring a bit more muscle than they might be comfortable with.
Battery Life
The Dyson V15 boasts a notable advertised battery life of 60 minutes, unlike the Gen5 Detect’s claimed 70 minutes of uninterrupted operation. These figures are impressive on paper, yet the reality of achieving these advertised run times tends to be an impossible task. Why? To achieve the manufacturer’s claims, you must attach the vacuum to a non-motorized tool and run it at the lowest setting. I tested each with the multi-surface floorhead and found them to run out of juice slightly faster.
Dyson V15 | Dyson Gen5 Detect | |
---|---|---|
Maximum Battery Life | ≈ 49 mins | ≈ 57 mins |
Minimum Battery Life | ≈ 11 mins | ≈ 8 mins |
Charging Time | ≈ 4 hours | ≈ 4.5 hours |
Regardless, both of these devices offer a respectable run time, even when operated with the main nozzle. In my estimation, a fully charged battery should suffice to handle all the cleaning chores in a small to medium-sized home.
Both the Dyson V15 vs Gen5 Detect use removable batteries. Hence, purchasing an additional battery to increase the vacuum’s run time could be a wise solution for those in multi-story dwellings or large homes where cleaning tasks exceed one hour.
Also, it’s worth noting that there are two ways to charge the battery. The conventional method involves docking the vacuum to its wall mount when not in use. However, for those averse to drilling into walls, there’s an alternative—simply plug the charger directly into the battery and stash the vacuum in a secure location of your choice.
In the handheld configuration, I had a bit of a hard time cleaning the overhead areas due to the bulk of the vacuum’s weight resting in my hand. To counteract the onset of hand fatigue, I had to switch hands frequently during the cleaning process.
Cleaning Performance
Winner: Tie
Suction Power & Floorhead
Prior to 2022, the Dyson V15 was the most powerful stick vacuum, with a maximum suction power of up to 230 AW. Now we have a new champion – the Dyson Gen5, boasting a suction power of 262 AW and surpassing all expectations.
The Dyson V15 comes out of the box with two floorheads: Laser Slim Fluffy and Digital Motorbar cleaner heads. The Dyson Gen5 also includes a Digital Motorbar cleaner head and a new generation Fluffy cleaner head called “Fluffy Optic” (more on that later).
Hard Floor
Large Debris | Small Debris | |
---|---|---|
Dyson V15 | 100% | 100% |
Dyson Gen5 Detect | 100% | 100% |
Both the Dyson V15 vs Gen5 Detect demonstrated remarkable performance on my hard floors, earning stellar scores across the board. Paired with the fluffy cleaner head, they easily captured all debris, leaving behind nothing but an immaculate floor. This level of excellence is attainable only by Dyson’s top-tier machines.
Carpet
Large Debris | Small Debris | |
---|---|---|
Dyson V15 | Low-Pile Carpet: 99% | Low-Pile Carpet: 98% |
High-Pile Carpet: 100% | High-Pile Carpet: 97% | |
Dyson Gen5 Detect | Low-Pile Carpet: 100% | Low-Pile Carpet: 99% |
High-Pile Carpet: 100% | High-Pile Carpet: 99% |
These formidable beasts consistently showcased their extraordinary power when used on my carpets. I used Digital Motorbar floorheads for this test, and they easily removed almost all the debris. Then, any lingering remnants were swiftly gathered during an additional pass.
Hair Test
They also easily captured all the hair strands scattered across my carpets and hard floor, leaving no trace behind. Almost no hair stayed on their fluffy rollers, and their Motorbar floorheads also did a good job of keeping the roller surface free from tangles.
Look closely at their Motorbar floorheads, and you’ll see a row of detangling vanes (called polycarbonate teeth) that I found effectively got rid of a good amount of tangled hair. There were still a few longer hair strands wrapped around the roller, and removing them was effortless.
As a bonus, both share a hair screw tool that is quite like a multi-surface floorhead but with a small footprint. This tool did a good job of removing hair on small surfaces with zero tangled hair.
Dustbin & Filtration System
Winner: Dyson Gen5 Detect
The Dyson V15 vs Gen5 Detect share an easy-eject dustbin with a capacity of 0.75 liters. Emptying them is easy thanks to the “Point and Shoot” mechanic – just push the red lever down to let all the content go straight down to the trash can.
The Dyson Gen5 boasts a fully sealed HEPA filtration system, which ensures unfiltered air is locked inside the unit until it passes through the HEPA filter. This feature holds immense significance for individuals afflicted by allergies. This filtration system is claimed to trap 99.99% of particles as small as 0.1 microns in diameter, meaning it can even catch viruses in your body.
Similarly, the Dyson V15 boasts a sealed filtration system, although its filter is not labeled HEPA. Nonetheless, the manufacturer claims that it can achieve a filtration rate of at least 99.97%. Since I couldn’t verify this claim, we must trust the manufacturer’s information.
Their filters are washable, so there aren’t any recurring costs related to replacing them. Whenever the LCD screen issues a maintenance alert, just give the filter a rinse under the tap and let it dry completely before reusing it.

Winner: Dyson Gen5 Detect
LCD Screen & Control Method
Their LCD screens provide the same set of information, including the current power mode (Eco, Auto/Med, and Boosst) and estimated residual duration in minutes and seconds according to the chosen mode. In addition, it also counts vacuumed dust particles, classifies them into four sizes (10, 60, 180, and 500 microns), and reports this statistical information on the screen in a bar graph.
Many people consider this dust-count feature to be redundant and gimmicky. But I believe their perspective would change once they understand the significance behind this data. Basically, it delivers a summary of the cleanliness level of a particular area – the fewer dust particles displayed, the cleaner the area is. Thus, it lets you know when you should spend extra minutes vacuuming an area. It basically serves the same purpose as the Tineco Pure One S11‘s dust sensor.
Regarding the control method, the Dssyon Gen5 has a power button similar to the Dyson V12, but it is on the rear panel instead of on top of the handheld part. So instead of holding down a trigger continuously for power as you do with the Dyson V15, all you need to do is press a button, and the vacuum will run seamlessly until you press it again. This enhancement is truly welcomed since it effectively reduces hand fatigue, enabling extended and more comfortable vacuuming sessions.
Laser Detect Technology
Both come with a Fluffy cleaner head, but the Dyson Gen5’s fluffy head is the newer generation one with a re-engineered laser. It is twice as bright, and its beam is broader to illuminate a larger area. Note that Dyson Gen5’s green laser will automatically activate when you turn on the vacuum, and you can’t turn it off during use.
