Dyson V12 vs V11 Outsize: Both are highly sought-after models from Dyson, one of the big names in the stick vacuum niche. This comparison delves into their respective cleaning capabilities, standout features, and ease of use, among other parameters, to equip you with the insights needed to identify the model that truly resonates with your unique requirements.
The Dyson V12 is the latest Dyson stick (despite a peculiar quirk in the chronological numbering, the V12 actually came out after the V15 by over a year). Of course, it is equipped with the brand’s cutting-edge developments, such as an onboard piezo sensor, “Laser Detect” technology, anti-tangle technology, a high-tech LCD display, etc. This one is designed with compactness in mind, resulting in a somewhat reduced dustbin capacity – a minor trade-off for its diminutive stature.
The Dyson V11 Outsize, on the other hand, is basically a Dyson V11 but stronger and bigger. It bristles with extraordinary power, offering a maximum suction capacity of up to 220 AW, slightly lower than the V15. In addition, it boasts a larger dustbin and a wider floorhead, which also come with a price – This one is very heavy and bulky, potentially making it less appealing to individuals with physical constraints.

The Dyson V12 wins 2-1 and has one draw against the V11 Outsize. That’s just the tip of the flat rock. Keep reading for more information!

Attachments & Storage
Dyson V12 | Dyson V11 Outsize |
---|---|
Laser Slim Fluffy Cleaner Head Motorbar Cleaner Head Hair Screw Tool Crevice Tool Combination Tool Wand Storage Clip Docking Station & Charger Removable Battery (X1) | High Torque Xl Cleaner Head Crevice Tool Combination Tool Mini Soft Dusting Brush Stubborn Dirt Brush Mini Motorized Tool Docking Station & Charger Wand Storage Clip Removable Battery (x2) |
Regarding storage and charging, the Dyson V12 vs V11 Outsize share a wall mount. By rolling up your sleeves and undertaking a few straightforward DIY steps to securely screw it onto the wall and connect it to the charger, you will have a tidy and convenient space to charge the vacuum and ensure it remains inaccessible to your furry companions or playful children.
This wall mount only has room for two attachments, and I could put two others on the vacuum’s body. So I had to seek out another safe location to store the remaining components of the set. It would be better if its wall mount could accommodate more accessories, providing a more convenient storage solution.
If drilling into the wall is undesirable or not feasible for you, an alternative approach is to directly plug the charger into the battery and find a suitable location to stash the vacuum and all the attachments. If budget is not a constraint, consider investing in a self-standing charging station with enough space to house the vacuum and all its accessories.
Weight & Usability
Weighing around 5.3 pounds, the Dyson V12 is one of the lightest members of the Dyson stick vacuum family. When I held it in my hand, it felt almost like a toy, making maneuvering and carrying this one an absolute breeze. It is even lighter and significantly more compact when used as a portable handheld vacuum.
On the opposite end of the weight spectrum, the V11 Outsize tips the scales at 7.85 pounds, which is the notable downside of this model. While pushing the vacuum around is not a problem, carrying it up and down stairs can be a challenging weightlifting exercise, especially for individuals with limited stamina. This one is noticeably lighter when used in its handheld configuration, but unlike the Dyson V12, I had to swap hands a few times to avoid fatigue.
Battery Life
When used with a suction-only tool and operated uninterruptedly at the lowest power, these machines are quoted as being able to run continuously for up to 60 minutes. But my tests showed they never achieved this remarkable one-hour non-stop runtime when utilized with the main nozzle. And that’s why it is nearly impossible for a vacuum to reach the claimed battery life in real-world usage.
Dyson V12 | Dyson V11 Outsize | |
---|---|---|
Maximum Battery Life | ≈ 42 mins | ≈ 52 mins |
Minimum Battery Life | ≈ 11 mins | ≈ 8 mins |
Charging Time | ≈ 4 hours | ≈ 4 hours |
These machines use click-in batteries, which are essentially removable and interchangeable, enabling extended runtime for uninterrupted cleaning sessions. They only come with a single battery. Therefore, if you reside in a larger household or have a spacious living space, it may be prudent to consider acquiring an additional battery separately to ensure a sufficient power supply for your cleaning requirements.
Cleaning Performance
Winner: Dyson V12
Suction Power & Floorhead
The Dyson V12 exhibits a peak suction prowess of 150 AW, rendering it the least powerful model among the trio of Dyson’s latest stick vacuum models. Meanwhile, as initially pointed out, the V11 Outsize reaches a top suction of 220 AW, just a notch below the Dyson V15 (230 AW).
The Dyson V12 includes a duo of floorheads: the Laser Slim Fluffy and Motorbar heads. The most noteworthy addition here is undoubtedly the first one, which has some improvements over the first-generation fluffy floorhead, such as a lower profile design and being fortified with an innovative laser headlight.
On the other hand, the V11 Outsize comes with a High Torque Xl cleaner head, which is similar to the V12’s Motorbar cleaner head but wider. Of course, it helps to clean a specific area faster, but getting in and out of tight areas is more difficult – so it’s basically a double-edged sword.
Hard Floor
Large Debris | Small Debris | |
---|---|---|
Dyson V12 | 100% | 99% |
Dyson V11 Outsize | 96% | 97% |
The Dyson V12, with the new generation fluffy floorhead, effortlessly collected all the sizable debris and almost all the smaller particles. Subsequently, it easily captured a small amount of remnant debris during an additional pass. These remarkable results are typically observed solely in models featuring soft rollers.
The V11 Outsize demonstrated commendable performance on this type of surface as well. It proficiently eliminated the majority of the overall debris, necessitating an additional pass to ensure complete removal. It’s worth noting that I had to fully open two gates on its floorhead to deal with the cumbersome and large debris.
Carpet
Large Debris | Small Debris | |
---|---|---|
Dyson V12 | Low-Pile Carpet: 100% | Low-Pile Carpet: 97% |
High-Pile Carpet: 100% | High-Pile Carpet: 95% | |
Dyson V11 Outsize | Low-Pile Carpet: 99% | Low-Pile Carpet: 96% |
High-Pile Carpet: 96% | High-Pile Carpet: 95% |
As for the Dyson V12, I switched to the multi-surface Motorbar floorhead, and it continued to excel. After the initial pass on both low-pile and high-pile carpets, all large debris was gone, and only a minimal residue of smaller particles was left behind. The V11 Outsize, likewise, also achieved very high scores across the board – Only a small amount of debris remained after the initial sweep.
Hair Test
Both machines easily captured all the hair on my surfaces. The Dyson V12’s duo floorhead did a great job of anti-tangle: nothing wrapped around its soft roller, while only a minimal amount of long hair remained on its multi-surface brush roll. On the other hand, a slightly larger amount of long hair stayed on the V11 Outsize’s roller, although still insignificantly so. Thankfully, it was a breeze for me to remove the roller from the floorhead using a flat object like a coin and untangle it by hand or with a pair of scissors.
Dustbin & Filtration System
Winner: Dyson V11 Outsize
Aside from a wider floorhead, the V11 Outsize distinguishes itself from other V11 versions with its exceptionally large dustbin, which has an amazing capacity of up to 1.89 liters. Meanwhile, the Dyson V12 resides at the opposite end of the spectrum, featuring a more modest 0.38-liter dust cup. A larger dustbin has an edge since it necessitates less frequent emptying, allowing uninterrupted cleaning sessions.
Emptying the dust canisters of these vacuums is both effortless and entertaining. I just had to detach the wand from the handheld part and push the red lever up and down a few times to remove all the contents. Dyson dubbed this hands-free mechanism “Point and Shoot.” I believe this innovative emptying system is among the most user-friendly mechanisms available.
These Dyson stick vacuums share a fully sealed filtration system, making them excellent options for people with allergies. Such a sealed filtration system ensures that all the captured particles and allergens remain trapped within the vacuum, preventing them from being released back into the air. These filters are washable and should be rinsed under the tap whenever the LCD screen alerts you.
Utilities & Other Features
Winner: Dyson V12
User Interface
Advanced and sleek digital displays have become increasingly prevalent in the ever-evolving realm of stick vacuums. And as a prominent big name, Dyson is certainly at the forefront of this trend.
The V11 Outsize boasts a cutting-edge LCD screen that serves a practical purpose and goes beyond being a mere decorative addition. It shows the estimated battery life in minutes and the selected power setting (eco, auto/med, or boost). Better yet, whenever the filter needs to be cleaned, isn’t installed properly, or there is a blockage in the brush roll, this display will alert you and provide troubleshooting videos.
The Dyson V12’s LCD screen is ahead of the game with the addition of a bar chart that shows vacuumed dust particles by actual count and size. In my opinion, this functionality is similar to the Tineco Pure One S11‘s recolorable loop – both provide real-time feedback on an area’s cleanliness and tell me if I should spend more time vacuuming it.
Control Method
Unlike the Dyson V11 and the remainder of Dyson’s stick vacuum lineup, the V12 doesn’t require continuous pressure on a trigger for power. Instead, all you need to do is press a big red button, and the vacuum will work until it depletes its battery or until you press the button once more. That way, it solves the problem of hand fatigue by having to hold down the trigger continuously.
Auto Mode
One thing that the Dyson V12 vs V11 Outsize have in common is the Dynamic Load Sensor (DLS) technology, which automatically enables the vacuum to adapt its suction power based on the surface type. But this feature is only available when the vacuum is paired with the High Torque cleaner head.
In addition to the DLS technology shared with the V11 Outsize, the Dyson V12 takes it a step further by incorporating a piezo sensor, which fine-tunes the vacuum’s suction according to changes in dust levels. Also, this feature works with both cleaning heads.
Laser Headlight
The last thing that sets the Dyson V12 apart from the V11 is “Laser Detect” technology, a small green laser on the fluffy floorhead. It makes dust and dirt particles visible, ensuring a more comprehensive and effective cleaning experience in dimly lit areas. I found it did a better job than any LED headlights on cheaper sticks out there.
