Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Outsize: Dyson V11 Outsize is basically a Torque Drive given a size boost with a more powerful motor and better battery life.
Although the Dyson V series has added two models with new models, the Dyson V15 and V12, the Dyson V11 Torque Drive is still one of the stick vacuums that captures the hearts of many users. It’s equipped with some features that not many brands offer, including an advanced digital screen and the ability to self-adjustment suction. Most importantly, its cleaning performance is also very well.
The Dyson V11 Outsize inherits all of the standard V11’s features and technologies but with a more powerful motor, a larger dustbin, and longer battery life. This giant cord-free vacuum can even rival an upright one. But its weight is the biggest downside – it’s cumbersome and heavy. Most people are ready to accept a mammoth-sized TV, but it differs from a stick vacuum cleaner.

Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Outsize: Differences
No one wins here! The Torque Drive version has a smaller dust cup and weaker suction, but it’s lighter, resulting in better maneuverability. The Outside, however, has tremendous suction and a super large dust cup, but it’s heavier and bulkier.
Cleaning Performance
Winner: Dyson V11 Torque Drive
Suction Power And Cleaning Head
The most significant upgrade of the V11 Outsize version over the V11 Torque Drive version is its suction. At the peak power setting, the Torque Drive version produces a maximum suction power of 185 AW, while the V11 Outsize version maxes out at 220 AW. The second one is even nearly on par with the Dyson V15 (230 AW).
Both the Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Outsize come out of the box with a High Torque cleaner head with adjustable gates – but with different sizes. The Outsize has a 12.6-inch multi-surface floorhead, which is 25% larger than the Torque Drive’s 11.7-inch cleaning head. The wider nozzle helps the Outsize cover the same area in fewer passes, resulting in less time spent vacuuming but making it difficult to get into tight areas.
Hard Floor
The Dyson V11 Outsize performed exceptionally on this type of surface. It sucked up all types of debris with an average removal rate of 98 – 99%. This is an unbelievable result for a model without a soft roller that is specially designed for hard floors.
The Torque Drive could also pick up almost all the debris without hassle. For larger debris, I had to raise the two gates on the nozzle to their maximum to be able to capture it.
Although these vacuums don’t have a soft roller like the V11 Absolute version, this part can be purchased separately on Amazon. I tested it and found that it could easily pick up everything in the first pass.
Carpet
Both the Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Outsized collected 99-100% of the total debris on my low pile carpet. But on my high carpet, while the Torque Drive still performed excellently with almost nothing left behind, the Outsize struggled with larger debris – That is the con of its potentially too much suction.
The Outsize was insanely strong, so it pulled my carpet up, resulting in not enough space for its nozzle to inhale large debris. To deal with this, I put the vacuum directly on top of the mess, and it worked.
Another minor issue is the hair wrap. There was a small amount of long hair wrapped around their rollers, but the Outsize’s broad brush did a great job of avoiding hair tangles. Anyway, untangling their rollers is a stroll in the park.
Design And Usability
Winner: Tie
Weight And Maneuverability
The V11 Torque Drive weighs about 6.7 pounds, which is lightweight enough that I could vacuum my entire house without experiencing any discomfort. By detaching the wand from the handheld unit, I could use it as a portable vacuum, which is much more compact and lighter.
Weighing about 7.85 pounds, the V11 Outsize is the heaviest model from Dyson – that is the price to pay for a more powerful motor, a larger dustbin, and a wider floorhead. The whole unit isn’t cumbersome, but if you vacuum for a while, your hand/wrist could get tired. When used as a handheld vacuum, it is still quite heavy at around 4.8 pounds. So holding it with one hand and going around is like a workout with a 5-pound dumbbell, making cleaning areas above your head a bit difficult.
Battery Life
Dyson V11 Torque Drive | Dyson V11 Outsize | |
---|---|---|
Battery Life | Eco mode: ≈ 76 mins | Eco mode: 84 mins |
Med/Auto mode: ≈ 35- 38 mins | Med/Auto mode: 25 – 43 mins | |
Boost mode: ≈ 9 mins | Boost mode: 19 mins | |
Charge Time | ≈ 240 minutes | ≈ 250 minutes |
Obviously, the battery life is also one of the advantages of the Outsize over the Torque Drive. Both use clickable batteries, which can be swapped to increase the runtime. With two batteries supplied, the Outsize’s run time may be increased to more than two hours when using the Eco mode. As for the V11 Torque Drive, the extra battery will need to be purchased separately.
Dust Cup
Dyson V11 Outsize
The Dyson V11 Outsize’s dust cup has a capacity of 1.9 liters compared to the 0.76-liter dustbin of the Torque Drive. The larger the dust cup, the more contents it can hold, resulting in fewer trips to the trash can but making the vacuum bulkier and more top-heavy. You have to take the bad with the good in any case!
The emptying mechanic remains the same: remove the wand/attachment from the handheld unit and push down the red lever on the side. This will lift the outer casing free of the filter and open the bottom door, then let all the contents go.

Attachments And Storage
Dyson V11 Torque Drive | Dyson V11 Outsize |
---|---|
High Torque cleaner head Stubborn dirt brush Mini soft dusting brush Combination tool Mini Motorized tool Crevice tool Wand storage clip Docking station and charger Batteries (x1) | High Torque XL cleaner head Stubborn dirt brush Mini soft dusting brush Combination tool Mini Motorized tool Crevice tool Wand storage clip Docking station and charger Batteries (x1) |
As you can see, the Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Outsize shares a set of attachments, except that the Outsize’s High Torque floorhead is wider and bulkier.
As for storage, they are all packaged with a wall-mounted charging station that needs to be fixed near an outlet to be able to store and charge the vacuum at the same time. The station can store two of the attachments, and you can put two others on the vacuum’s body thanks to the wand clip.
For individuals who are smitten with their walls and don’t want to ruin them by drilling a few holes, consider buying a self-standing station. While this type of charging station comes with several models as part of the purchase, you must purchase it separately for the Dyson V11.
Filter System
As with all Dyson vacuums, the Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Outsize share a sealed system, meaning all the allergens cannot escape before being captured by the HEPA filter. The HEPA is washable and reusable, but it may degrade over time and needs to be replaced one day. It makes sense to have a spare filter on hand so you can keep using the vacuum without having to wait for the main filter to dry completely.
On/Off Control
Both the Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Outsize use a trigger control, which needs to be kept pressed while vacuuming. This mechanism will stop the vacuum from running when you pause and put it down, which conserves the battery and makes it less likely that something will be sucked up accidentally.
Many people found their hands tired after pressing and holding the trigger for a while. That’s why it is superseded by a large, red button on the Dyson V12, the newest version, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Dyson continues to apply it down the line.
Interface
The V11 Outsize also inherits the interactive LCD screen of the standard V11 model, which can tell you how much run time is left and some maintenance alerts.
There is a single button on the screen used to toggle between three power modes: eco, auto, and boost. With the auto mode turned on, the machine can automatically adjust its suction depending on the type of surface you are cleaning, thanks to the Dynamic Load Sensor.
