Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Ball Animal 2: This is a battle between a cordless stick vacuum and a corded upright vacuum. And my recommendation is the first one.
The Dyson V11 Torque Drive is an excellent all-around cordless vacuum. It excels on carpets, works well on hard floors, has excellent battery life, is easy to use, and it’s not heavy. Yes, its price is on the high side, so if you’re after an affordable cordless stick, you’ll need to consider another one.
With 306 AW of suction power, there is almost no surface the Dyson Ball Animal 2 can’t effectively clean. Apart from endless suction power, it won’t make you feel restricted, thanks to a 35-foot power cord. Plus, its superior filtration system makes it great for those who are sensitive to particles, dust, dander, and more.

Cleaning Performance
Winner: Dyson V11
Suction Power And Vacuuming Modes
The maximum suction of the Dyson Ball Animal 2 is 270 AW. This is higher than most other Dyson vacuums, including the Dyson V11 (185 AW in boost mode), but lower than the Ball Animal 3 (290 AW).
The Dyson Ball Animal 2’s suction is non-changeable. The floorhead’s height can be automatically changed to accommodate the type of surface you are cleaning. That said, you can move from one surface type to another without doing any manual tweaking.
The Dyson V11, on the other hand, has three cleaning modes, including boost, auto (or med), and eco:
- The boost mode produces the most powerful suction but drains the battery the fastest.
- The auto mode allows the vacuum to automatically adjust suction power based on the surface you’re vacuuming, thanks to an advanced sensor. But if you replace the Torque Drive Motorhead with an attachment, this mode will change to med mode.
- The eco mode produces the weakest suction but has the longest runtime.
Hard Floor
The Dyson Ball Animal 2, with the roller off, worked great on my hard floor. Its cyclonic power allowed it to suck up almost all the dirt. Its self-adjusting head could rise high enough to capture some types of debris but would fail to remove large debris like fruit loops.
The Dyson V11 also performed well on hard floors. I was glad that there were gates on its cleaning head that could be adjusted to capture larger debris. It picked up about 96% of the debris in a single pass, and the results could be better if it were combined with a soft roller floorhead. This soft roller floorhead is packed with the Dyson V11 Absolute, but you can buy it separately for under $140.
Carpet
On my carpets, the Ball Animal 2 also performed well, and its dustbin was quickly filled with dust, dirt, and hair. I didn’t find it challenging to move, though some users reported that it was a little harder to push through the carpet, especially the high-pile one.
The only issue with the Ball Animal 2 was that it had such incredible suction that it pulled the floorhead down into the high carpet. As a result, it pushed a large portion of larger debris, such as cereal and fruit loops, forward.
As for the Dyson V11, it worked best with the Auto mode turned on. With the boost enabled, I had to adjust the gates on the floorhead to make it easier to maneuver the machine and capture all the large debris.
Hair Removal
The floorhead of both has no anti-tangle technology, so a decent amount of long hair wrapped around the brush roll, and this led to a clean-up time later. That was when I found the anti-tangle technology on more recent Dyson models, such as the Ball Animal 3 or the Dyson V15, to be more helpful than ever.

Note that the version of Ball Animal 2 I’m referring to is Fully Clean. If you opt for the basic Ball Animal 2 version, the number of accessories you will receive is significantly less.
The Dyson Ball Animal 2 is large, which means it will occupy a lot of space. I think it is better suited for houses than apartments. The Ball Animal 2 can stand up for storage. It also provides onboard storage for several tools, but not all.
The Dyson V11 can be easily stored anywhere thanks to its slim profile. There’s a wall bracket that can be used to store and charge the vacuum simultaneously. This bracket can house two attachments, and you can store two other attachments on the machine’s body. If you want to store the vacuum cleaner and all the attachments in a single place, consider purchasing a floor stand.
Weight And Maneuverability
The Dyson V11 is a cordless stick vacuum, while the Ball Animal 2 is a corded one. So the Dyson V11 is obviously lighter than the Ball Animal 2, which is a no-brainer.
The Dyson V11 weighs 6.7 lbs, which isn’t the lightest of the Dyson sticks, but it is still manageable for me to use with one hand for extended periods of time. Note that this machine is a bit top-heavy, so most of its weight was in my hands.
On the flip side, the Dyson Ball Animal 2 weighs 17.2 pounds, making it among the heaviest upright vacuums I’ve tested. Even though it has a proprietary ball-shaped mechanism, maneuvering it was still a daunting task.
Range/Battery Life
With the combination of the Dyson Animal 2’s hose and extension wand, I had an extra 15 feet of reach, which was ideal for cleaning under/behind my furniture, stairs, and up high. Better yet, it features a 35-foot cord, giving a total reach of 50 feet. So I could clean almost every area of my house from a single outlet without an extension cord.
As a cordless vacuum, the Dyson V11 offers unlimited mobility before running out of battery. How long it can last largely depends on the cleaning mode used.

The good news is that the Dyson V11 uses a click-in battery instead of a built-in one. That means its battery can be removed, replaced, and recharged independently. Therefore, its runtime can be extended by purchasing extra batteries.
Dustbin Capacity And Filters

The Ball Animal 2 features a 2.08-liter dustbin, which is very large, so I didn’t have to stop in the middle to empty it constantly. It was also easy to detach it from the machine, so I didn’t have to carry the entire cumbersome vacuum to the trash can. Better yet, the release button is on the cup, so my hand didn’t get dirty.
The Dyson V11 has a rather small dust cup at 0.75 liters, but that turns out to be larger than average. It shares the point-and-shoot dust bin emptying mechanism with most Dyson cordless vacuums.
Both the Dyson V11 Torque Drive vs Ball Animal 2 have a HEPA filter, which is declared lifetime washable and can trap particulates as small as 0.3 microns. This filter is located on the top of the Dyson V11 and in the ball of the Ball Animal 2. Dyson recommends washing it monthly and letting it dry completely for 24 hours before attaching it back to the vacuum.

Display Screen
The Dyson V11 sports a handy LCD screen that shows the current cleaning modes and remaining battery life by the minute. There is a small button under this screen that is used to toggle between three cleaning modes: eco, auto, and boost.
The Ball Animal 2 has no display screen. There are two buttons on its body: one to turn on/off the vacuum and one to turn on/off the roller. I wish these buttons were on the handles so I didn’t have to bend over every time I moved from hard floor to carpet and vice versa.
Alternate Configuration
The Dyson V11 can be reconfigured into a handheld vacuum by removing the tube. As for the Ball Animal 2, you can use the wand/hose by locking the machine into an upright position so suction will go through the wand instead of the floorhead.
