Bissell 2252 vs 2494, which one will win the debate of inexpensive vacuums for homeowners? After cleaning messes with these models, from thick carpets with pet hair to open bare floors with sand and dust, I have concluded that Bissell 2252 is the better choice.
The winner, Bissell 2252, has been a trustworthy favorite of homeowners for years due to its great cleaning performance against different types of debris and its ability to change the head height to adapt to more variable surfaces. In addition, users can trust pet hair cleaning with the PetTurboEraser nozzle to clean their pets’ short to medium hair spotlessly. Despite having certain flaws, the device is perfect for its price.
As for Bissell 2494, the vacuum cleans very well on a good day. The device can also handle variable debris sizes thanks to the proper airflow and adjustable powerfoot height. Technological-wise, there is nothing to complain about this machine. However, operational-wise, this vacuum has some issues with the suction’s stability and hose attachment, which I will explain further below!

Bissell 2252 vs 2494: Differences
Bissell 2252 wins 2-1 and ties once against 2494. The former is more stable in terms of suction power, and its parts aren’t lousily attached like what I experienced with 2494. The device still has some minor weaknesses, but still is a good choice for its price. I will review how both work for me so you can decide for yourself.
Cleaning performance
Winner: Bissell 2252
Low-pile and high-pile carpets
In every instance, these models perform amazingly well against low-pile carpets. I put the cleaning effectiveness to the test on a low-pile carpet that was covered with cat fur. Even with layers of short hair stuck to the carpet, the triple-action brushroll’s soft bristles can effortlessly lift the hair strands! I’m surprised by how much hair the gadgets can collect because I can see the outcome via the dirt bin itself.
Regarding longer pet hair, these devices can clean, but struggle a bit. This is very normal for vacuums in this price range. After all, long hair strands aren’t something easy to remove without a trace. For better cleaning performance, I advise cleaning the brushroll after each use or every 2 uses to ensure that longer strands aren’t obstructing the intake port, the lower hose, or the premotor filters.
As for high-pile carpets or rugs, these vacuums need a bit of adjustment. Due to the fuzzy texture of this surface, the devices may have a very hard time moving around if their powerfoot is too close to the floor. So, users must adjust the 5 variable head height settings, so the suction power doesn’t eat up the carpets.
Bare floors
Against bare floors, these machines don’t struggle when cleaning. The brushroll and high suction power can lift from pet hair to pieces of paper scattered around your study room or living room. Also, there is a set of various accessories that target each cleaning purpose skillfully. For example, you can detach the hose from the dirt bin and the motor to get into the lift-away function, accessing small corners and high ceilings.
What makes Bissell 2252 the winner is its stability. 2494 sometimes loses power, and the airflow drops, affecting the cleaning performance’s consistency. I like how I can swipe and clear a section with Bissell 2252 by moving the machine back and forth once only. With 2494, it can take many more pushes and pulls to free the floor from debris.
Filtration system
Tie
Bissell uses a multicycle filtration system to clear the airflow and exhaust dust-free air only. That’s what the theory is all about. The system involves a premotor and post-motor filter that needs different types of attention.
The premotor filter is located under the top lid of the dirt tank. It can be washed with water and needs replacement after around 3-6 months. If the workload is small, the filter can last a tad longer. As for the post-motor filter, it can’t be cleaned with water. Users have to tap it to remove any dust buildup, though.
From my experience with the devices and as someone with a sensitive nose, the filtration system is doing great. I don’t notice dust particles in the airing exiting via the exhaust port.
Utilities
Winner: Bissell 2494
Bissell 2494 wins thanks to its automatic cord rewind feature. Normally, vacuums come with long power cords that allow users not to have to plug and unplug frequently. But, this can also cause an issue after cleaning when they want to put the machine in the garage or store it anywhere else without having to double the cord every time. With a touch of the button, I have been able to rewind the 25ft cord of Bissell 2494 into the vacuum itself, totally hassle-free.
Other than that, these models don’t come with other special technologies, which is logical for their price points. So, users should consider the budget and the possible utilities they can get within their resources. Even without advanced tech, the standard cleaning features and the friendly price is a great combo for any homeowner.
Design and Convenience
Winner: Bissell 2252
A detail about 2494 that bugs me is the flimsy attachment of the hose to the additional nozzles when working in life-away mode. It has fallen off a few times, and I don’t like incompatible attachments. However, regarding 2252, it doesn’t suffer from the same hose problem, so there isn’t anything for me to complain about.
On a good note, both vacuums have the standard design of an upright model, which can be switched to a handheld cleaning device with a detachable hose. Moving the vacuum around with the hose in one hand and the canister in the other is possible. Thanks to the 25ft power cord, it’s not a difficult task either. The length is ideal for cleaning small to medium rooms with furniture placement. As for a larger room, a 30ft cord or longer might be better.
