Shark IZ440H vs IZ462H: the first one comes in purple, while the second one is blue, and that’s not the only difference.

The Shark IZ462H comes out as the overall winner since it comes with more attachments and uses a detachable battery – So, by purchasing an extra battery separately, you can easily double its runtime.

The Shark IZ440H, on the other hand, uses a built-in battery – so if it runs out of juice when you are in the middle of the vacuuming schedule, you’ll need to plug the charger into it and wait about three hours to pick up where you left off.

Shark IZ440H Vs IZ462H: Differences

The Shark IZ462H wins 2-0 against the IZ440H: the former comes with more attachments and uses a detachable battery, so you can swap out the batteries to extend its runtime.

  • Dusting Brush: The tool allows you to adjust the angle of the brush head to clean baseboards, shelves, countertops, and more.
  • Combination Tool: As its name suggests, this 2-in-1 tool can be used as an upholstery tool or a dusting brush.
  • Crevice Tool: This tool comes in handy when cleaning nooks and crannies, high areas, and edges.

Battery Life

Winner: Shark IZ462H

According to Shark, the battery life of the IZ440H and IZ462H is 50 and 60 minutes, respectively. I turned on each one (with the main nozzle attached) until they ran out of juice to see if this claim was honest, and here are the results I got:

Shark IZ462HShark IZ440H
Max Battery Life≈ 43 mins≈ 36 mins
Max Battery Life≈ 13 mins≈ 12 min
Charging Time≈ 3.2 hours≈ 3 hours

It appears that the battery life Shark refers to corresponds to when the vacuum is attached with non-motorized attachments.

What puts the Shark IZ462H ahead of the game here is that it uses a removable and detachable battery. So once the installed battery dies, it is a breeze to replace it with a fully charged spare battery (which needs to be purchased separately). The charger can plug directly into the battery, so I could charge it without having it installed in the vacuum.

The Shark IZ440H, on the other hand, uses a built-in battery that isn’t removable, so there is no way to extend its runtime. To give the battery a charge, I had to plug the charger directly into the port on the handheld unit.

Shark IZ440H Vs IZ462H: Similarities

Cleaning Performance

DuoClean Floorhead

The most recent models of the Dyson V series (the V15 and V12) come with two rollers: one soft roller and one bristle brush roller. Shark got ahead of the game by putting these two types of rollers in a single floorhead and calling it the DuoClean floorhead, which is the main selling point of these Shark Vertex vacuums. With this futuristic design, I didn’t have to constantly switch cleaning heads whenever I moved from one surface type to another.

The soft roller is at the front and is very effective in cleaning hard floors, while a rubberized spiral roller (aka PowerFins roller), with some silicone fins, digs deep into carpets for better dirt pickup.

My tests showed that these Shark Vertex vacuums worked well on both hard floors and carpets. They could pick up an average of 98%+ on my floors, which is impressive for mid-range stick vacuums. On my carpet, they only left a small trail of fine debris, which also confirmed the high score.

Another advantage that this “PowerFins” upgrade has over the standard bristle roller is the ability to prevent hair wrap, and that’s why it’s called the self-cleaning brushroll. This design is truly a godsend for pet owners like me.

Design & Usability

Reaching deep under furniture is always challenging, even for the lightest stick vacuums. Reaching deep under furniture is always challenging, even for the lightest stick vacuums, but that is not the case for the Shark IZ440H vs IZ462H. They are equipped with the patented Multi-Flex Technology, which allows the wand to be flexed up to a 90-degree angle to access low areas without bending over.

Another benefit of this technology is storage. Most stick vacuums rely on a wall-mounted stand or dock for vertical storage and charging, but these vacuums don’t. Multi-Flex technology allows the vacuum to fold in half to reduce its vertical footprint for more compact storage. In the “flex” configuration, the vacuum can stand on its own and fit in a cupboard.

Weighing about 9 pounds, these vacuums are on the heavy side. In the handheld configuration, they are significantly lighter at about 4 pounds. So you can end up with a tired hand after cleaning high areas for long periods of time. The pivoting head allows you to clean tight spaces with ease, and LED headlights keep the cleaning path illuminated.

Dust Cup & Filtration System

The Shark IZ440H vs IZ462H share a 0.32-liter dust cup. It is on the small side, but the ease of emptying it makes up for this. Just simply push down a lever to eject all the contents into the trash can – no contact with the collected dirt. In addition, the dust cup can be removed for thorough rinsing with water when needed.

If you have severe allergies, you’ll be fine with either of these since they also share allergen-complete seal technology and a HEPA-level system. The sealed system ensures allergens can’t be expelled back into the air. They will certainly be captured by two pre-motor filters (felt and foam) and one post-motor (HEPA) filter

All filters are washable and can be reused many times. Two pre-motor filters, which sit at the top of the bin, should be rinsed with water once a month, while the post-motor HEPA filter only needs to be washed once a year.

User Interface

Both the Shark IZ440H vs IZ462H are ergonomically great, with a slider on the handle that’s within thumb reach and used to toggle between the two surface settings (carpet and floor). Also, there is a pistol-like trigger that I used to enable maximum suction to pick up larger debris on the hard floor. It would have been better if it had a digital display on top of the handheld unit that showed the battery life (I found one on the Shark IZ662H).
