What is the difference between Dyson Ball Animal Origin vs Animal 3 Extra, this article will tell you that. After experiencing both machines, here are my personal reviews. For me, Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra has the upper hand.
Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra outstands thanks to its excellent cleaning performance on a variety of surfaces. It can handle from fine particles to large debris like Froot Loops. If you are a pet owner, I highly recommend this product as it is both tangle-resistant and has an allergy-friendly filtration system.
Dyson Ball Animal Origin is also a serious opponent. It has a large dust container so require less emptying. The maximum reach up to 50 ft gives users much better experience. In my point of view, it is best suited for cleaning hard floors and low-pile carpets.

Dyson Ball Animal Origin vs Animal 3 Extra: Differences
After weighing the differences between both vacuum, I found that Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra wins 3:1 against Dyson Ball Animal Origin thanks to its cleaning performance, convenience, and accessories. Read the breakdown below to learn more details.
Cleaning performance
The winner: Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra
Performance on hard floors
Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra has excellent performance on hard floors. The cleaning head of this machine is redesigned, completely different from previous models.
The new cleaning head has a smaller cleaning path width, which really gives you more options when maneuvering the unit in tight spaces. The front of the cleaning head is equipped with gates that can be adjusted to fit a specific type of surface. As a result, the vacuum cleaner can handle from fine debris to large debris equal in size to full-size Froot Loops. You won’t need to switch from the main nozzle to the wand to pick up large debris.
In addition, the brush roll of the Animal 3 Extra has also been redesigned with stiff and dense nylon bristles to better remove stubborn stains without scratching the floor.
Meanwhile, Dyson Ball Animal Origin works well with small and medium debris, but a bit struggles with larger particles. Its cleaning head is the original version, which adjusts the height by itself thanks to the baseplate at the bottom. It can move up and down depending on the specific surface type. The advantage of this type is that users can vacuum continuously without stopping to adjust the nozzle height. However, its disadvantage is its limited self-regulating ability.
Performance on carpets
Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra does a great job on both low- and high-pile carpets, even on very dense carpets. There is a switch at the front of the cleaning head that allows the user to make adjustments to make the machine roll better on carpets. There are three settings for you to choose from, with the highest setting for thick carpets and the lowest setting for bare floors.
Besides, the brush roll with dense and stiff bristles also helps the machine dig deeper into the carpet, thereby picking up more dirt and debris than at every pass.
Meanwhile, Dyson Ball Animal Origin is best for low- and medium-pile carpets. On shag carpets, it’s quite hard to maneuver, and you will need to put a lot of effort into pushing and pulling the machine. This is because of the limited self-adjusting cleaning head height. Another part is due to the large weight and suction power, so the machine tends to wrap itself on the carpet.
Suction strength
According to Dyson, the Animal 3 Extra’s suction power in boost mode is about 290 AW, while the Origin’s is about 235 AW. As you may likely know, Airwatt (AW) refers to the number of watts a vacuum cleaner uses to carry a unit of air through an opening or nozzle. The higher the air watts, the higher the suction power. Therefore, in this aspect, Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra has stronger suction power than Dyson Ball Animal Origin.
My favorite thing about Dyson Ball Animal 3 is that I don’t have to sacrifice much suction when opening all the gates. Even if I leave the gates open at the highest setting, the suction power is still equivalent to Animal 2.
Pet hair performance
As for the pet hair pick-up tests, Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra is somewhat better than Dyson Ball Animal Origin.
The plus point of both machines is strong suction power, so picking up pet hair on bare floors is not a big deal. However, when on carpets, the Animal 3 Extra has better performance. The Animal 3 Extra’s brush roll lets you dig deeper into the carpet and pull out more and more hair.
The point that I want to emphasize is that Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra offers users an anti-tangle function, while Dyson Ball Animal Origin does not. The Animal 3 Extra has a range of de-tangling vanes above the brush roll, which can comb out the hair and reduce tangles really effectively. Meanwhile, the Origin has a lot of hair wrapped around the roller after vacuuming. You will need a little more time to get all that tangled hair out of the brush roll. Tangle hair can also cause a running machine to stall.
Dirt bin and filtration
The winner: Dyson Ball Animal Origin
Dirt bin
Both machines are bagless vacuums, and they use a hygienic bin to store all the dirt, pet hair, and debris. The bin is made out of polycarbonate material, which is the same type of material used in football helmets as well as riot gear, so it is very sturdy. It is easy to detach and empty.
The Dyson Ball Animal Origin’s bin has a capacity of 0.53 gallons, while the Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra’s is about 0.45 gallons. In general, such capacities are quite large, allowing users to vacuum comfortably without having to empty them often.
There is a maximum level mark in the middle of the dustbin. When the dirt inside reaches that level, you need to empty the trash immediately. If the dirt exceeds the Max line, it can affect performance, and the filter will get dirty faster.
To empty the dirt bin, press the button on the handle of the box to remove the bin from the body. Hold the bin over a trash can and press the button on the handle until the bottom lid opens. Dirt can stick to the baffles on the bottom of the bin, so you need to take care of cleaning those places. In particular, you also need to keep the screen inside the bin always clean so as not to reduce the suction power of the machine.
The dirt bin also houses the Radial Root Cyclone™ system, which generates powerful suction and removes allergens from the air. This system generates centrifugal force to separate dirt and particles from the air, then toss them into the dustbin. It is one of Dyson’s patented technologies that holds more dirt than any other cyclone model. All dirt, mold, bacteria, fur, and other debris are trapped inside the hygienic bin, providing the user an inner atmosphere.
Filtration
Both machines share the same filtration system, which is certified asthma and allergy friendly by asthma and allergy foundation of America in their seal of approval. This system can trap 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns, such as mold, bacteria, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, cigarette smoke, and more.
Each machine comes with two filters, one in the dirt bin and the other in the ball. These filters are washable and reusable, so you don’t have to spend money to buy new filters. Also, they are easy to access and disassemble.
The filter in the dirt bin is a pre-motor filter. To get it out, you need to push the catch on the front of the bin’s handle, then lift the filter out. The post-motor filter is in the ball. To remove it, turn the lock in the center of the ball until the cover is released, then turn the filter counter-clockwise until it releases and lift it out. The detailed steps are all in the manual.
Dyson recommends that users only wash the filters with cold water and let them dry for at least 24 hours before reassembling.
Design and convenience
The winner: Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra
Maneuverability
In my opinion, the maneuverability of these machines is quite good. One of their outstanding advantages is Ball™ technology, which allows them to move more flexibly around furniture. The manufacturer has assembled the parts of the vacuum cleaner into a spherical array, with the heaviest part near the floor, creating a curved body with a low center. The “ball” allows the unit to turn in one spot and move more flexibly easily.
In addition, the distinct design of their cleaning head also helps them move more smoothly both on hard floors and carpets. In particular, the Animal 3 Extra’s vacuum cleaner also allows the machine to move well on very dense carpets.
The biggest downside that makes them less maneuverable is weight. These two machines are the same weight, about 17.3 pounds. Since the machine is a bit heavy, you will sometimes find it a little difficult to control, especially when on the carpet.
Range
These machines have the same cleaning reach. Their power cord is 35 feet long, the hose is 15 ft long, and the maximum reach is about 50 feet. Compared to other models I have reviewed before, the operating range of these machines is relatively wide. This is also the reason why they are heavier than other vacuum cleaners in the same price range.
I can use them to clean the entire first floor without changing the outlet. The long hose also makes cleaning the stairs easier. These machines stand very firmly on the floor. You just need to put it at the bottom of the stairs and use the hose to clean each step from the bottom up.
Noise level
From what I have measured, the noise level of the Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra is around 75.6 dB, while the noise level of the Dyson Ball Animal Origin is around 80+ dB. Both have above-average noise levels when compared to other upright vacuums. However, considering their performance, such noise levels are acceptable. The reality is that most upright vacuums are quite noisy.
In my opinion, Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra is not too noisy. However, you cannot talk normally, watch TV or listen to the radio when someone is vacuuming in the room.
As for the Origin’s noise level, you can think of it as the noise of a busy downtown. If you are exposed to this level of noise for more than 8-10 hours a day, it will harm your hearing.
Note that these specifications are all measured by me, so they are for reference only. The noise level of the machine also depends on the surface the machine is cleaning.
Accessories
The winner: Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra
If Dyson Ball Animal Origin only offers users the usual cleaning tools, the Animal 3 Extra comes with a tangle-free turbine tool. As such, this machine not only has an anti-tangle function at the main nozzle but also gives people a specialized pet hair suction tool. This tool helps to remove stubborn pet hair and ground-in dirt from upholstery and cars without tangles.
